“Don't talk rot, Whitney," said Rainsford. "You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?” This quote is from the beginning of the short story, and portrays how at first, Rainsford believes that hunters should have no sympathy for their prey.

"Rainsford did not want to believe what his reason told him was true, but the truth was as evident as the sun that had by now pushed through the morning mists. The general was playing with him! The general was saving him for another day's sport! The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror." This quote from the text signifies Rainsford finally being able to empathize with the animals he hunts; a turn in his character. He now understands the fear and terror. of being hunted

"The general made one of his deepest bows. 'I see,' he said. 'Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford.'...

He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided."
In the ending of the short story, it is implied that Rainsford beat Zaroff at his own game, and killed him. When Zaroff first revealed to him that he hunted humans, Rainsford was appalled and said he would never condone murder. However, due to his environment, Rainsford clearly made an exception for General Zaroff, and killed him himself.

Rainsford is a skilled hunter and trapper, so he knows the hunt. He does what he has to do to survive such setting up traps to kill or misleading someone. Before getting stranded o the island, Rainsford had no empathy for animals and that they had no feelings or emotions. This might be different in the end after he is hunted and may have more respect for animals, but we never find out if he is a changed person in his beliefs.

In "The Most Dangerous Game,"Rainsford is a round character because he is described like a realistic person today. He is also a dynamic character in the short story. In the beginning, he believed animals had no feelings. Towards the end when Rainsford is being chased in the jungle, he realizes how animals feel and that he misjudged them.
