What role does the coach play in body pedagogies?
Discipline- people could be punished for not reaching targets or goals. could lead to the exclusion of athletes
- a coach is the one who enforces the standards and pushes athletes, its what they are there to do (be a motivator)
- if a coach effects an athlete at an early age then a performer could have a negative experience and hate the sport

What are the ramifications?
Athletes have negative opionion on themself and the sport. At elite level there is no enjoyment- it is seen as a job/requirement.

    • These ideals are instilled in the 11 year olds
    • Creation of standardised body which ALL successful swimmers must conform to otherwise their 'career is over'
    • There is constant surveillance of the body - Panopticon
    • Perceived as threatening - weighing yourself in public - everyone watching
    • Ensures everyone keeps to the desire body
    • Doesn't account for sociological/environmental determinants of health
  • Scrutinised, neglected, marginalised because they are 'worse' than everyone else - this view that one body is the correct body and each individual must conform
    • Limited acknowledgement of differentiation - or uniqueness
  • The coach
    • A role model; someone who instils their views into the performers
    • Disciplinary power
    • Can instil the belief that it is solely the responsibility of the performer to manage their weight
      • Weight being the primary measure of fitness
      • No consideration of external influences
  • Poor sense of self, low body confidence
    • Does this lead to body disaffection creating long-lasting effects for individuals
    • Are they too young to properly understand health?

Athletes who exceed their weight expectations are perceived as out of shape and not having the right attitude to training - despite the athletes being 11 and so are still growing.

    - Individuals who feel as if they should meet expectations in terms of their body, might be unrealistic for them depending on how they are naturally built. From this, they might feel burnt out due to the nature in which they would have to push themselves to achieve these expectations for their body. If they aren't met to the standards which are set, especially at a young age, they will feel as if they aren't good enough, and won't be able to participate due to it, causing them to be demotivated, leading   them to not enjoy playing the sport like they did before, and decreasing participation in the sport.  

    - Those who don't meet the expectations set by the coach will feel inadequate and are more likely to drop out of their sport. Only those who are at the top of the hierarchy will benefit, those who are not up there, for whatever reason, will be at a disadvantage.

    - The athletes might lose motivation and stop participating. It could also have long-term effects in terms of future participation but also with mental health.
