Stalin controlled the USSR through fear. To keep the citizens under control, he would execute the people who opposed him and he expanded the secret police. Millions of people were killed or sent to labor camps called gulags (primary source: shown above) as a result of people being encouraged to spy on each other by the government.

The first 5 year plan was from 1928 to 1932 and focused on the industrialization of various industries along with transferring the ownership of most private farms to the government. It started in 1928 on October 1. 
It was common, when farms were forcibly  transferred to government ownership, for farmers to destroy their fields and kill their livestock, which resulted in food shortages. As people were forced to leave their farms, more started to work in factories. Those that chose to work in factories had to deal with harsh conditions, little pay, and long hours. Hundreds of people were put in prison for not meeting their quotas, or for being accused of sabotaging the five year plan.
