Title : Stolen Identity

     First, I was struck by the degree of emotional impact and the consequences. Through the poem, I can feel an extreme anger, resentment against a brutal war and conviction done by all the world. Second, the consequences of the cruel and ruthless slaughter through Bastille stormers and European’s greed could be imagined easily, lost laughing, silenced voice, and neglected heritage.  Third, her determination and vision to rewrite the history and speak out the crime done to her people have been revealed. Apart from her harsh feeling and resolution, I can assume that she tried to embrace her history and people who have been suffered from past traumas and scars by European settlers and deliver her vision in confidence.  I would like to know what kind of relation with Gallic Bastille stormers has with the author. In the case of making another title for this poem, I will make it as “Stolen Identity”.

The thing which struck me, was the title of the poem, "War". This word is mostly used in male writing than in women, so I can imagine how strong had to be the author.

Lee Maracle in the first strophe mention that in her flow European and Indigenous blood, so I thought she was the fruit of the love. But, then author speaks badly about the Europeans and I couldn't understand why, till I translated the poem and I found the reference to the rape, which shocked me a lot. Was she born from rape? Everything points that yes, and it's so sad, painful so the anger grows in me. Now, I'm not surprise that she's so anger about what happened to her and her tribe. All of it make me sick about colonizers, disappointed and shame, especially shame...

These sentences impressed me the most "European thief, liar, bloodsucker/ I deny you not. I fear you not. Your reality and mine no longer rankles me". That show how anger the author was and the hatred toward European, those people whom stole Indigenous People land and slaughtered their ancestors. 

Another sentences that made me impressed and formed a question inside my head which is if my home land had been taken like Indigenous People, would I do the same for the sake of my culture, of my people ? Those sentences are "I am moved by my scars, by my own filth/ to re-write history with my body/ to shed the blood of those who betray themselves". I could see what would the author do to protect her people and how brave she is. Despite of the pain physically, nothing can compare to the lost of traditional, history, culture, lands and the pain of Indigenous People had suffered throughout many centuries such as rape, torture, slaughter, discriminate.

"War" begins on a light and gentle tone, setting the reader's mind on a serene countryside scene. Then I ask myself why loud noises?
I believe Lee Maracle wants to create a similar feeling of what the Indigenous peoples felt in her audience. I felt like a child whose favourite ice cream had just been snatched away and eaten right in front of her.

In my opinion, "War" is a suitable title for the poem because many a times we need to fight for what we love. Lee Maracle did introduce herself strongly and deeply by introducing her blood, nationality and gender. What also I can sense is there is a deep anger in her that wants to come out and how people enjoyed using and torturing while she/ they had to suffer. 
She also clearly described that there was plenty of incident of rape, very hard labor, torture, robbing, raiding native people brutal way. She felt anger and injustice but there was no way. 
what mostly stuck into me is native people have it all and why people had to be so mean and cold blooded with them. And why RAPE? As native people had to lose everything but this kind of movement prove that native people were basically dealing with the most vicious and barbaric situations. It makes me feel like I been knowing Europeans wrong and what I knew is they were the most educated people throughout the history. but at this point I think I knew the wrong story and this poem basically said the harsh dark truth about what actually happened in history. I would put “History Of Blood Shed”  as a title of that poem.

You can sense her emotions, they aren't voided out, but you can really hear and feel her raw emotions coming out. Some things that really struck me was as the poem progresses, so does the events of her life. Some questions that raise me is how can she still stand up when all of this happened. All I can say is how brave and excellent she is for standing up and keeping the Indigenous blood inside her. My impression of it was a really surprised, yet not so surprised-type of impression. The reason is because it is stated about calling the Europeans, liars. Even though I know that, I was still surprised at the level of raw emotion when she was going at them and how she shall not falter at any given moment. She wants to change and tell the real history of colonization at all costs. After reading the poem my soul shook. The title of the poem "War" is also appropriate according to me.

In the first part of her poem, she expresses that her identity was lost and silenced but what struck me are the lines: “Your reality and mine no longer rankles me. I am moved by my love for human life; by the firm conviction that all the world must stop the butchery, stop the slaughter.” I feel like she’s making peace with the pains and aches of her past experiences caused by colonization. She is liberating herself with the lies, her fears, and coming out proud and victorious of her origins. Even if her very core and her blood shout for her to fight and take revenge, she chooses her love for humanity and even asked to stop hurting each other. Honestly, I had a hard time reading between the lines of her poem but the transition of her emotions from furious to a selfless person is superb.

She stressed that the truth cannot be rejected, that it may strengthen individuals, and that we should take note of it.
