They were to research the climate, the natural resources, the natives of the land, weather conditions, establish trade with the Native Americans, and have the French and the British and the Spanish know that the land is the U.S. They were to follow the Missouri river to discover these vast new lands.

When the Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the US, the land was divided into territories and as the population grew, it could become states. When Alabama and Illinois accepted to be in the union, Alabama would be a slave state and Illinois a free state. Missouri took months to be in the union because the south would then lose its power to vote and to block any anti-slavery bills. Most of Missouri is already in the Northern area where slavery is banned and if Missouri did enter the union, Northerns thought that it could spread throughout the whole entire Louisiana Purchase. The Southerners thought that Congress has no right to prevent slave owners from keeping slaves in a state. Northern people were thought to be trying to end slavery. Then, Henry Clay made a compromise. Missouri would be admitted to the union as a slave state but Maine a free state and a line would be drawn across the purchase to limit slavery above the line. This is event was leading to the Civil War because the North and South have completely different opinions on slavery and the line was just a "band-aid".

While debate about the Missouri Compromise stopped for a bit, the nation was still bickering about slavery. People who wanted to end slavery sent numerous anti-slavery petitions to congress but they just ignored them. A man named Nat Turner made a slave rebellion but then more than 50 white people were killed. Fears of further violence led to stricter slave laws. Meanwhile, enslaved people continued to protect their rights by running and some generous Northerners were able to help them escape. After America fought a war with Mexico and won, the US needed to decide if they would allow slavery in that area or not. The North thought the Mexican Cession should be a free territory or the new territory should be decided by popular sovereignty. The South believed that all of the Mexican Cession should be open to slavery or the Missouri Compromise line should be extended all the way to the Pacific coast. The final compromise was that the North would have California added to the union but as a free state and the slave trade in Washington DC would end (slavery itself did not). For the South, the Fugitive Act was passed. This act made it easier for slave owners to find and take back slaves who've escaped. The Mexican Cession was divided into two territories, New Mexico and Utah would be decided if it was free or not by popular soverginty. This event leads to the Civil War because congress still hasn't resolved the confilct of slavery between the North and South and this caused violence.

But, in 1854, Senator Douglas proposed to divide the territory into two, Kansas and Nebraska. Both would decide the issue of slavery through popular sovereignty. Douglas wanted to open the territory to build railroads and to have them pass through the land. Then Kansas became a state and was a breeding ground for political violence. Settlers came to the land to either oppose slavery or to encourage it. People were so violent because of the slavery issue, Kansas was now known as "Bleeding Kansas" This drove the Civil War because now that people are being extremely violent, this is causing the Civil war to happen.
