VOCABULARY

The use of word walls help students remember and easily locate classroom vocabulary. It also helps with spelling as students see the word repeatedly and have confidence when writing it. I would adapt the word wall by not making it overwhelming with words. I would incorporate the prefixes and Greek/Latin roots were are studying in Phonics First. I would make it visually engaging, but very easy and clear to read. I would review the word wall constantly to make sure students understood and remembered the meanings of the words we placed. http://www.readingrockets.org/content/pdfs/World_Walls_-_A_Support_for_Literacy_in_Secondary_School_Classrooms.pdf

I would provide students an opportunity to show their comprehension by doing an "exit ticket" on their way out the door. The exit ticket question would show that students understand the material we learned during the day's read-aloud. For students with disabilities, I would help them organize their thoughts before writing the ticket and assist in placing the ticket in the correct area before leaving the room. They may have a decreased amount of words that they have to write OR they could simply verbally tell me the answer as many of them take quite a while to put their thoughts onto the paper. https://www.pinterest.com/larenerkins/exit-ticket-ideas/

GRAPHIC AIDS

I love the idea of the graphic novel classroom, teaching students with images in a highly engaging way. Teachers can present the informaiton in the form of a graphic novel image OR have the students fill out/make their own graphic novels to show comprehension. A great example of this is the online storyboarding websites that allow students to create small scenes to answer a question or show comprehension of a subject. It could be adapted by having students with disabilities do smaller amounts of the graphic aid, have the help of a peer tutor or partner to help them create the graphic aid, or draw theirs by hand if the computer program is too challenging. https://www.amazon.com/Graphic-Novel-Classroom-POWerful-Teaching/dp/1412936845/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1475442650&sr=8-10&keywords=graphic+aids+for+comprehension
