Invasion Of Norway- April 9, 1940 - June 10, 1940

Germany invaded Norway's north cities and Oslo in the south. The German invasion was induced due to the extreme number of Jews living in the country. Britian attempted to help Germany with the invasion, however, Norway surrendered on June 10th. There were about 10,000 German troops during the invasion capturing Norway's capitals. The Norwegian government and King Haakon VI made an escape to London. Germanys Nazi party founder, Vidkun Quisling, pronounced himself as prime minister of Germany. By the result of capturing Germany, Hitler made sure the iron sore supply from Sweden has bases so they would be prepared to help Britain due to Hitler's admiration to their country.

Battle of Britan- July 10, 1940

The Battle of Britain was a battle that was fought through the majority and aircraft and air force navies. Germany wanted majority of their aircraft in the air for superiority for the invasion of Britain. Britain and their allies defeated the Luftwaffe, which is known as the Nazi German Airforce. This is important to history because since WW2 it was Britain's second major victory. This battle gave hope to the matter of Germany being able to being defeated and forced Germany to cancel the invasion of Britain.

Attack on Pearl Harbor- December 7, 1941

Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by the Japan forces in 1941. Eighteen U.S. naval vessels were sunk and badly damaged from the surprise attack of a 350 Japanese aircraft. Over 2,000 men were killed as well as 300 U.S. aircraft and eight battle ships destroyed. The attack was planned very secretively and came as a complete shock to Hawaii, leaving us unprepared to fight back. Japan hoped for a weaker U.S. naval army and wished to obtain oil supplies from the bombing. This is significant because it was the battle that tied the U.S. into World War II by declaring war against Japan.

Battle of Coral Sea- May 4, 1942

On May 4th, 1942, Port Moresby in New Guinea was being attacked by the Imperial Japanese Army. The U.S. aircraft fleet fought back with Australia as an allied force to successfully defeat the attackers. Port Moresby was preserved and not invaded into leaving the Japanese air force with destroyed and damaged aircraft. This is very important because it leads into the battle of Midway by Japan not having as much power in their forces allowing them to become a weaker nation and easy target.

Battle of Midway- June 4, 1942

The Battle of Midway was fought through the majority of aircraft when the U.S. destroyed some of Japan's first-line carrier strength and killed some pilots as well. The U.S. needed powerful action to defend themselves thus attacked Japan aircraft. This battle took place over the course of five days, ending on June 7th, 1942. This is significant in history because this battle can be considered as a turning point in the war. This battle completely changed the viewpoint on the war for the Pacific causing the intensity of the war for the Pacific to increase.

Battle of Stalingrad- August 23, 1942

The Battle of Stalingrad was a battle that lasted around five months with the time periods of August 23, 1942 - February 2nd, 1943. This battle consists of Nazi Germany going against the Soviet Union to capture the land of Stalingrad, in Southern Russia. During this battle, Germans became capable of running tanks down streets, to trap infantry that the Soviet Union could have used. This is known as one of the bloodiest battles of the war because by the time it was over, about 750,000 Soviet Union soldiers had been killed as well as 850,000 Axis forces. Eventually, after all the gruesome events of the battle, around 91,000 German soldiers surrendered. This left the Soviet Union with a major victory that is a turning point in the war. This is important because it let the Soviets keep control of Volga and have access to oil fields.

Battle of Attu- May 11, 1943

The U.S. invaded Attu with their seventh inventory division on their beaches. The U.S. fought for around 19 days to achieve and capture every inch of land they could get. This battle was important because it was the only battle in which was fought on an American island. The battle was three weeks long and took around 549 Americans lives for the land.

Battle of Tawara- November 20, 1943

The battle of Tawara consisted of the first American offense in the Pacific. This battle set off America going against Japan for one of the first times in the war. The U.S. sent American troops on aircrafts all over the Pacific causing the Japanese to start losing ground. The battle was 76 hours long, losing 1,700 Americans and 4,700 Japanese soldiers' lives. This was important because it made America and Japan enemies in the war.

Capture of Berlin- May 2, 1945

Soviet forces began to attack the north, east, and south on May 2nd, 1945. The Red Army wanted revenge on Berlin from making many Soviets suffer. The Red Army fought for a long 12 days until they were finally able to capture Berlin. This is significant because it showed how the Soviet Union was a major threat to the war and they were not easily defeated. The Soviets capturing Berlin let them have control over Germans nuclear research before Americans could get their hands on it. Thus, the Soviets had a major advantage compared to the U.S.

Victory in Europe Day- May 8, 1945

Europe took a major victory on May 8, 1945, because of Germanys surrender. Germany surrendered its troops to Europe as well as the United States. Because World War II was so intense and devastating for many, when Germany surrendered, it marked the end of the war. This day is considered to be a national holiday because of the importance it symbolizes on the freedom of the people in Europe.
