This is the result of the infection HIV left untreated. The survival rate in a person infected with AIDS is typically 1-3 years depending on factors.

A person is considered to be infected with AIDS when the level of CD4 cells drop to about 200 cells per cubic millimeter of blood. In plain terms, this is not enough to fight off any infection and your body slowly shuts down as a cause of it.

There are different strains of HIV according to avert.org. The commonly accepted theory is that at some point in time a human came into close contact with a chimp by either bodily fluid (blood) or hunting and eating. Chimps originally became infected with SIV from smaller species of monkeys whom created different strains. This explains why there are different strains of HIV today because of how they adapted in the human body.
