How I helped my father in law fulfill his wishes at end of life. He was isolated because of his health conditions. None of the family was ready to go closer to him. When I went to give him food that day, he asked me it's time for me to go and can you arrange for a clean shave and haircut? I obliged. Compassion and Inclusion when no one supported me. But the barber was too kind to obliged.

A typical in a fieldwork in community psychiatry setting. This is was a reflective and practice undertaken by me to medical students, with respect to their emotional responses during a visit, and to provide them with a compassionate space to address their concerns and queries.

This pencil and ink drawing by my daughter, Rohini, was done at a time when she suffered from an injury and could hardly walk. She uses visual metaphors for the challenges she faced. I was reminded of this drawing which is titled "The Acceptance Conference" when Parvathy asked us to post. For me the space of acceptance - where pain can take so many different forms - is an inclusive and resilient space.

The participants were from various nationalities, yet we all felt part of a family. This is a small corner on the 2nd floor of our hospice. It is quiet, a prayer altar, and a few chairs to let people gather / rest / spend timme together. We also play soothing music here for music therapy.

I often found my patients' families resting / sleeping in this corner. Patients also love to spend time here praying.

Transit Spaces - Public, Chaotic, Resilient

What first came to mind - definitely thanks to my soft spot for them - was public transport: state buses and depots, trains, and railway stations, metros, tram .. While they may not always tick every box on inclusivity and are often a far cry from compassionate spaces, they are undeniably resilient (anyone who's taken public transport in India will likely agree!).

These spaces house so many experiences and emotions - calm, chaos, frustration, joy. Here's a moment from a recent journey: this young adult, refusing to sit despite his mother’s warnings. He clung to the bars for nearly 50mins to enjoy the drive. What a delight!

Here, professional singers transformed the hospice into a sanctuary of shared humanity—where patients, regardless of their health struggles, experience joy, dignity, and connection.

In this moment:

Music dissolved barriers between caregiver and patient
Laughter became medicine, easing both physical and emotional pain
Resilience grew through togetherness

This highlighted how healing spaces:
-Welcome everyone without judgment
-Create opportunities for joy despite hardship
-Nurture resilience through shared experiences

This was more than entertainment, i think.

It showed such inclusive spaces can lighten heavy hearts and restore hope.

Here is my resilient space-this us a collage of few photos of our very own, very close-to-heart OncoLink, one & only 'palliative care hospital' situated in Nadia district of West Bengal. Here we learn together, do patient care, make vibrant interactions with inmates. Here we eat together, enjoy nature with our patients. As Medical Director of a small hospice, this picture highlights the realistic struggle to transform a space compassionately.

We recently upgraded this space to create a outdoor area in a window-less overcrowded, hospice for patients to simple but vital opportunity: to step outside and breathe fresh air.

The reality of this intention is trying.

Now used as a car park, a resting place for an old toilet and with personal items competing for patients sitting space.

This is the definition of Inclusivity & Resilience: Compassion in Social Fabrics and although it can be frustrating at times, the overall goal continues to empower us to keep going.

The truly inclusive and resilient space to me is Mother Earth and Nature. A brilliant flower has equal right to space as a mighty oak or a tiny weed or a parasitic climber. Tiniest blade of grass buried under snow for months ,waves merrily in the spring breeze. 'Othering' as a concept is a human construct. We only need to observe and mimic nature around us to build compassion in social fabric. Mitakuye Oyasin, ancient Lakota prayer reflects inclusivity and compassion.

This is the view at the end of my morning walks. The Mona Reservoir, almost full to the top, is visible through the trees. Further out in the distance are the Blue Mountains, the highest mountain range in Jamaica, and the home of the world famous Blue Mountain coffee. As I climb on to my tree stump, I gaze out through the trees at the Mona Dam (as we locals call it), and the mountains blue and solid beyond, and I remind myself that balance is not an end- state but a process of maintaining equilibrium, that healing is not an endpoint but a journey, and that grief is not a never ending shower of rain but a river that flows through both beauty and desolation, ultimately leading to the sea where joy and sorrow coexist in harmony. This is a place where I pause, breathe and build my resilience.

The Kollam We park is an initiative under Kerala Design Policy team which aims to promote user centric spaces . Under utilized space under a fly over was reimagined as a public space . The neglected space perceived as unsafe is now currently used by all age groups encouraging interaction . This demonstrate that well planned interventions can improve the quality of spaces .

This is a swimming hole about 15 minutes from my house. Even though it is cold in Tasmania, people, including me, swim much of the year. It is completely free to swim here. All sorts of people of all ages come and chat, the one bond is being mad enough to get into the cold water. I find this a place of resilience in the personal challenge of swimming here and the kindness of a group of strangers who support each other. This place is also an antidote to my work as a palliative care doctor.

I see my local public park as an attempt to be inclusive, as it seems to have something for (almost) everyone: (1) a recreation centre for senior citizens (white building on the back left), accessible by stairs and ramp; (2) play area with fixtures and sand for children; (3) tennis courts frequently used by young adults; (4) walking tracks and open gym equipment accessed by all; and (5) sheltered and open benches for all (photo centre). The lush greenery makes people prefer to come here from 3-5 kms away, even though other public parks exist in those areas too. A notable drawback is that the park entrances are not wheelchair-friendly.

This is a 2.5-year-old picture, taken during my first visit, during the Christmas celebration at the OAT NITC campus.

This space is both inclusive and resilient; it serves as a hangout for students in the evenings, a space for mourning the losses of fellow humans, a venue for protests, a platform for theatre and drama, and a space for celebrations. wheelchair-friendly space as well.
