This was also the first war between Israel and the Arab countries when Israel declared itself an independent state. Arabs being against this, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria attacked Israel, this made Israel gain a lot of territory. It wasn't until 1979 that Israel made peace with Egypt. Israel lost 6,000 soldiers and the Arab losses came out to be an estimation of 2,000 regular soldiers but during this war, there were thousands of irregular or innocents that also got murdered. It started on July 26,1956 when Gamal Abdel Nasser, the Egyptian president, nationalized the Suez Canal. The canal was owned by The Suez Canal Company, but was really under Britain and France. On October 29, 10 Israeli brigades invaded Egypt and went towards the canal, this got the Egyptian forces very angry. Britain and France demanded that the Israeli and Egyptian forces withdraw from the canal or they would get involved and enforce a cease-fire which was ordered by the UN. On December 22, the same year, the UN evacuated Britain and France troops. Palestinian guerrilla attacks on Israel made by syria led to high tension between the two countries. Syria was scared of getting attacked by Israel so they turned to Egypt for help. Israel was scared as well of getting attacked by the Arab nations so they launched a "preemptive strike" against the three Arab states on June 5th, 1967 (this was the start of the war). The war ended on June 10, five days later when Israel launched a ground offense and took over the Sinai Peninsula, The Golan Heights, The Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. Most soldiers were away or not present because of this day (day of atonement). The Arab nations had advanced weapons from the soviets help. Later during the war, Iraqi armies showed up and after just a few days, Israel was fully mobilized. The soldiers of Israel started fighting back to push the Arabs out which caused a lot of casualties and loss of equipment. On October 25th, an Egyptian-Israeli ceasefire was secured by the UN and this was the end to the war. Israel attacked Palestine liberation organization (PLO) targets in Lebanon on June 4th. Lebanon responded with rocket and artillery barrages, Israel then sent troops into Lebanon and was called "Operation Peace for the Galilee". the Israeli troops quickly overthrew PLO positions, and after many battles, the PLO surrendered and evacuated to Tunisia in September. The total number of casualties during the war was 49,600 for both Palestinian and Lebanese people. In 1983, Israel signed an agreement with Lebanon to terminate the state of war. It really didn't occur to me that there was so much conflict between Israel and the Arab countries, I mean, so many wars happened between them it's crazy to me. I've learned so much about these five wars and how each one of them is so different and interesting but were between the same countries, I feel like you would think their ways of fighting would start becoming the same but that is not the case here.
