Anti-Jewish Boycott April 1, 1933

On April 1st 1933, The Nazis hold an economic boycott against Jewish offices and Jewish businesses. The Nazis claimed this boycott was an act of revenge for damaging Germany’s reputation. Nazi storm troopers were standing outside of Jewish owned department stores as an act of intimidation. They were holding signs and shouting as a form of protest. The stores were also vandalized with anti-Semitic slurs and symbols.

Even though the campaign lasted only one day, the boycott marked the beginning of a nationwide campaign by the nazis against the Jews. Although this boycott was ignored by many Germans, it still showed the people that the Nazis were serious about thinking the Jewish people were sub-human.

Law Limits Jews In Public Schools April 25, 1933

After Hitler was appointed as chancellor, the government began to have laws and policies restricting the rights of Jewish people in Germany. In public schools, the student population was not allowed to exceed more than 5 percent of Jewish people. Before this law, 75 percent of Jews attended public schools. This means that the majority of Jewish students were kicked out of their school and forced to find a new method of education.

The public school system played an important role in spreading Nazi ideology to children in Germany. Teachers were ordered to teach students militarism, obedience to the state authority, racism, antisemitism, and to love Hitler.

University students start the first book burning in Berlins Opera square. They burn more than 25,000 books that they claim are “un-German.” After this day, more university students across Germany burned thousands of books that were “un- German.” Which began state control and censorship across the country. The students sought out to purify German books of “foreign” literature.

Not only did the burning of books destroy culture, but it also eradicated any separate ideologies. It prevented people from learning about other peoples point of view.

Nuremberg Race Laws, September 15,1935

The purpose of the Nuremberg law was to isolate, identify, and segregate Jewish people showing racist theories in Nazi Ideology. It showed the legal framework for the systemic murder of Jewish people in Germany. The laws did not define Jewish people as a religion, but as a race of humans. Many Germans who have never practiced Judaism found themselves considered Jewish under German law.

This step in Genocide (Identification) helped make it legal for the murder of Jewish people. They classified the people they thought were sub-human and were able to persecute these people legally.

Olympic Games Held In Berlin, August 01, 1936

The summer Olympic Games were held in Germany. It was a propaganda success for the Nazi party as they hid their anti-Jewish signs and activities from the visiting countries. While the anti semitism was still going on in Germany, they covered it up so other nations wouldn’t try to stop them.

Buchenwald Concentration Camp Opens, July 15, 1937

The SS authorities open one of the largest concentration camps in German borders, the Buchenwald’s camp. In the beginning, the camp was only for male prisoner's until 1943. The SS members had barbed wire fence and watchtowers surrounding the perimeter of the camp. The prisoner's of the Buchenwald camp were often shot in the camp stables, and hung in the crematorium area.

The Concentration camps murdered thousands of people at a time on an industrial level.

Anti-Semitic Exhibition In Munich, November 8, 1937

An exhibition in Munich opens, promoting antisemitism and extreme propaganda. The Exhibition showed Jewish people as secretly being in charge of the world and depicting them as against Germany. They also linked Judaism to communism. It was a travelling exhibition being seen in various German cities.

By showing an anti semetic display of propaganda around Germany, it fed more Germans the Nazi ideology of Jewish people, and why they thought they needed to get rid of them.

In the law on the Alteration Of Family And Personal Names, it required German Jews to have their name partially changed. For men, they had to add the name Israel to their name. For Women, they would adopt the name Sara into theirs.

This made the Jewish people more identifyable. It separated them from society.

Kristallnacht, November 9, 1938

Also known as the night of the broken glass, Kristallnacht was an organized event that was meant to look like a public protest against the Jewish people. Synagogues were burned, Jewish owned businesses and shops were destroyed, and Jewish houses were raided. Some Jews were badly hurt, and others were murdered.

Kristallnacht is an important event in this timeline because it’s directly showing the mass destruction of the Jewish peoples culture. Even though this was planned, the Nazis claimed that this violent protest was unplanned, and a “rise of the people.”

Euthanasia killings, August 24,1942

In response to a mass protest, Hitler began ordering “euthanasia” killings. 70,000 people at ‘euthanasia’ facilities were murdered. It involved both adults and children with intellectual and physical disabilities. They would starve them, fail to treat their serious diseases, and inject them with lethal drugs.
