On the day of testing, even if we had gone through a rigorous training process with the school site and those proctoring - SOMEONE had to be there to support.

Remember that you can only be in one place at a time. :-)

Many of our Techs took a more active "student support" role. In some cases you might have thought they were even teachers. Their presence alone put teachers at ease.

Testing within the classroom on 5-7 computers (in the back of the classroom) was NOT successful.

When determining how long testing will take, the numbers don't always tell the truth. In reality kids have recess, lunch etc. which made planning complex and almost all testing sessions ran much longer than scheduled.

Teachers & proctors require basic technology troubleshooting to successfully assist their students through the process. Ongoing training will be needed.

Even though SBAC gave very detailed directions, we also gave out a quick reference guide for the day of testing for teachers to use. It didn't replace the full directions but it calmed nerves a bit.

Performance Task - We found many of our computer labs are not conducive to the instructional piece that accompanies a performance task. Understanding this ahead of time, it may help to have an alternate room for the instruction prior to returning to the lab to complete testing.

"As this test relates to our current teaching strategies it is very clear to me that beginning next year (2013-14), our students must interact with technology on a regular basis. We must help our students become more efficient and effective at using these technology tools. Teachers will have to modify strategies and begin to incorporate the use of technology by students on a regular basis. An occasional typed paper is not enough to prepare our students."

We found that our labs were useful but the test was easier to take for students on larger monitors. However, for this year's testing, we are looking to see how the flexibility of the Chromebooks will facilitate the test-taking experience. Especially after utilizing the Chromebooks as a daily function in the classrooms as well.
