Troy has a wife Rose, two sons Lyons (from a previous marriage) and Cory, a brother Gabriel, and a best friend Bono. At the beginning of the play it opens up with Troy and Bono on payday. They discuss about issues at work and Bono brings up that he thinks Troy is cheating on Rose. Lyons then comes over and asks for 10 dollars which leads into an argument with Troy. Troy gives him the money in order to help his son. Troy then learns that his other son Cory has quit his job so that he can get a football scholarship in North Carolina. Troy gets angry with him and tells Cory to keep his job otherwise he has to quit football. Time passes and Troy is now the first colored man to drive a garbage truck. Bono and Troy celebrate and talk about the past. Cory comes home angry with Troy because he can no longer play football. Troy considers this "strike one". In the next scene, Troy bails his brother out of jail. Troy and Bono work on the fence that Rose wants to be built. Troy admits to Bono that he is cheating on Rose with Alberta. Troy tells Rose about the hearing for Gabriel in three weeks for a asylum. Troy then tells Rose about his affair and Rose begins to get upset with Troy. Troy grabs Rose's arm and Cory defends for her by grabbing Troy from behind. They fight and Troy considers it Cory's "second strike". After 6 months, Troy tells Rose that he is about to go to the hospital because Alberta is in early labor. Rose tells Troy that he has sent Gabriel to the asylum because he couldn't read what he signed on the papers. Alberta dies while in labor. Troy brings home his new daughter, Raynell. He asks Rose if she will be her mother and she accepts but she says that he is now "a wifeless man". On payday, Troy and Bono talk for a little bit and then Cory shows up. Troy tells Cory to leave the house and provide for himself. Cory get's mad and points out all of what Troy has done is his life. Tory and Cory physically fight and Cory is kicked out of the house. Eight years later, everyone is preparing for Troy's funeral as he has had a heart attack and died. Cory comes back home from the Marines, Lyons and Bono are also there for Rose. Rose is struggling to get Raynell in her dress for the funeral and tries to get Cory to stay for the funeral. Cory and Raynell sing a song together that Troy use to sing all the time. Cory decides to go to the funeral. Gabriel arrives and tries to blow his trumpet because he thinks the Heavens have opened up.
