Point to Ponder:

Think of those whom you would like to see God bring swiftly to justice, maybe someone who caused you lots of personal harm. What do you do with your anger when you see God allow them to go on with no end in sight?

Point to Ponder: Where do you think we will find Christ in the book of Jonah?

Point to Ponder: How does this help you in the storms of life?

How can we be so deceived? How is God's grace to us so comforting in our fallen state?

Point to Ponder: How does God's love for Jonah show you the depth of His heart? (for you)

Look how powerful the word of God is! That wimpy confession, from a man running from the God he is confessing to believe in, works faith in these men!

Point to ponder:

Reflect on the sign of Jonah. Jesus' ultimate sign to you of who He is and what He does for you. It's going all the way down on your behalf and coming back up to make sure you go from barf to banquet.

Point to Ponder: Think of 2 callings God has given you that you either despise as mundane or want to flee from.

Reflect on the impact that God could have on you and others if you embraced them.

Point to Ponder: Think of all the things God could say to you every morning for all our failures. Think of the grace of Him quietly forgiving you and still continuing to give you the privilege of fulfilling your calling.

Point to Ponder:

How can we be less like Jonah in our callings and more like John the Baptist?

Point to Ponder: How were you convicted? How do you see God's love more clearly?

Point to Ponder:

Think of the times you were afraid to speak God's word because you desperately cared about the outcome, then contrast that with Jonah's half-hearted attempt! How does this take pressure off of you in the moment?

What seems exceedingly evil in your life?

How do you deal with that anger?

Point to Ponder:

Write yourselves some I-will statements. To help you write the ending of the book of Jonah! You write these and carry them out based on the Gospel, not based on the law.

Example: I will...show grace to the most annoying person at work. (Instead of waiting to see them get fired)

There are many things that seem exceedingly evil in my life because the whole world is - well I wanted to say tainted with sin - but then I realized it's more than tainted - it's full of sin. The world is sinful. So there's a lot of things that make me angry; our leaders who don't lead, people who act inhuman and inhumane, situations that I can't make better or don't understand how to solve . . . the list goes on. And it's not righteous anger. It's usually vindictive anger, no better than Jonah. And that is because I am sinful as well, and that makes me ashamed. I deal with the anger and shame by repeatedly turning to the cross, and praying to Jesus, thanking Him for doing what I could not, can not, and will not do - being a perfect sacrifice for God's righteous anger due to my sin. Knowing what Jesus has done allows for the anger to be let go, because how can you be angry when you are reminded what an awesome gift that Jesus has given. I pray for the Holy Spirit to allow me to remember that precious gift, and to let go of the anger, and embrace the joy of salvation.
