When someone nods or says things that make me feel like they understand what I mean. I think validating my feelings, asking good questions (which can also include being critical), and reflecting back what they heard is good too.

I try to do all the things I said above. I also try to talk less (because I talk too much) and ask questions instead of assuming (bc when you assume you run the risk of being totally wrong, and this creates a feeling of not being heard)

In writing, I think you can build rapport in a few ways. First and most importantly, is to be yourself and not to dilute your message. It’s not our job to relate to EVERYONE with our writing, and the people who will relate to us will likely relate the most when we tell our stories honestly. I think trying to invite them in and painting a picture of what you’re trying to convey is helpful too so they are not confused. For me, I try to put myself in the readers shoes as someone who isn’t ME. Like, how may someone react to what I just wrote/said. I say this not in a judgmental way, but just in a way to gain perspective.
