Through pursuing this goal I have learned time and time again that understanding one's emotions is of the utmost importance in life, aside from acting. Once again I learned this lesson during the devising section of PCP. During one of my short devised pieces I portrayed an imprisoned person working in a penal colony with three other inmates. I tried to be honest to the situation and the scene when using the boom whackers by exaggerating the weight of the instrument as if it were as heavy as an axe and to the character by thinking about how I would feel if I was in his position. Though it does not mean complacency or just going along. During the playwriting and directing module of PCP I had a partnered project with my classmate Connor. We were told to each write a monologue and then write a scene together after time had passed from when the monologues were given. We decided we were going to mime out one another's monologues on stage while the other spoke. So, we had to write in opportunities for physicality. This made it difficult to portray characters with consistent qualities and emotions and how they might authentically interact with those around them. We ended up putting a lot of time into editing each other's work and narrowing down what one another's character would not say. This made writing the scene much easier. This was how we harnessed each other potential to the fullest. Sadly, I have never been someone who could say they know much about lighting but my classmate Eli put out an idea that he wanted lighting to play a big role in our performance. Then we grew the idea to involve projection work. It worked wonders. Through listening to each other's ideas and not shooting them down we were able to form a piece that told a story that left the audience wanting more. We created a full narrative with lots of specific details. I believe it is crucial to have your own opinions but also being able to discuss them with your collaborator(s) in an academic manner without passing judgment on them or imposing your own.
