Located in New Caledonia in the South Pacific, the New Caledonia barrier reef is the second-longest double-barrier coral reef in the world, after the Belize Barrier Reef at 930 mi. The reef encloses a lagoon of 9,300 sq mi, which has an average depth of 82 ft. The reefs lie up to 19 mi from the shore, but extend almost 120 mi to the Entrecasteaux reefs in the northwest. It is home to endangered manatees, and is an important nesting site for green sea turtles. In the lagoons of New Caledonia, there are many water species ranging from plankton to larger fish and even sharks.

The reef is important to humans because it contains over 7 million tons of nickel which makes New Caledonia the worlds 5th largest producer after Russia, Indonesia, Canada and Australia. on top of the excess of nickel, it also brings in money from scuba divers so that's a plus.
