What a Wonderful Life, By: Louis Armstrong (Song 1)

I see trees of green, red roses too

I see them bloom for me and you

And I think to myself what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white

The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night

And I think to myself what a wonderful world

These are some of the lyrics in the song and they relate directly to transcendentalism for many reasons. The lyrics, much like transcendentalism are about loving the world and realizing its beauty. As the song goes on the singer, Louis, learns things about life from just whitnesing them and seeing them in nature, and that is exactly how a transcendentalist is supposed to learn, from nature, not a bunch of mass produced textbooks. What a wonderful world is a very good song and lulls the listener into a very peaceful and relaxed state of just pure appreciation for our world.

This piece of art is called “The Gold of Nature” and it was painted by Leonid Afremov. This piece of artwork is perfect for transcendentalism, because it depicts a scene in nature of true beauty and tranquility. This takes place in the fall, when all the trees are changing colors and has a few leaves on the ground already. On the path, there is a single person just walking, and taking in Nature. This is how it's like to be a transcendentalist. Transcendentalists are very separated from all else and just focus on nature and learning from it and it's true beauty.

This is a very powerful quote by Thoreau, and it has everything to do with conformity. The way i take this quote, is that society has a way of shaping and molding everyone to be the same person, and have the same goals (fishing). People need to be strong and confident enough in who they are to accept that they are different and chase their own goals when people say otherwise. Whenever somebody is the slightest bit different, or has some kind of dream that is not just average, people want to make fun of them, but we really need to be praising these people because they know that fish is not what they are after.

This article is a little different than a story of some beautiful forest somewhere out there, but rather about plants growing on the moon. One of the central beliefs in Transcendentalism is that God is in all life no matter what. This is a story of how God prevails in one of the harshest environments ever. A plant, or in some sense God, is everywhere, even on the moon. Transcendentalism focuses on the beauty in the little things, and this plant on the moon is very little and insignificant. But Thoreau taught us that all things are significant and anything can happen, even a plant growing on the moon!

This is a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. This quote is almost a building block of transcendentalism because it’s about being open and how love and god is in everything and everyone, you just have to look. Emerson tells us that the only way to get a friend is to look for the good in other people and accept them into our lives. Then, and then only. Will other people truly begin to accept you. That is a true friendship in the eyes of Emerson, a bond formed with love, trust, and companionship.

I’m this quote Henry David Thoreau is talking about simplicity. In the current world or lives are almost dictated by the “details.” This includes things such as what we wear, or what kind of phone we have. All these material things, or “details” distract us from life, and its beauty. To truly transcend and live life to the fullest a person must not get caught up in all the details and just begin to live with simplicity.

This quote by emerson speaks on simplicity, and taking in your surroundings. Everyday people miss amazing things that the world has to offer because their head is in their phone. Phones and technology distract us from the incredible world that God has made for us. Even if it’s just for a second or two, everybody needs to take time every day and just look up. Take in nature, all the smells, sounds, and scenery that GOd has put on this Earth. It is truly amazing, and people miss it too often.

Kelly begins with talking about where he was mentally (not in a good place). The song then shifts to him learning about his inner power and how he can do anything when he just believes. Just like transcendentalism, all you have to do is believe and just be the best version of yourself than anything can happen. R. Kelly says how he feels like he can fly and soar through the air as if he is enlightened. He has reached his inner understanding and belief that he is unique and this empowers him.

This is a very cool image, that has deeper meanings than meets the eye. The person in this photo, like transcendentalism shows that a you cannot be your true self without realizing the beauty of the world. Half of this kid’s face is made up of nature, it makes me think of Thoreau, or Emerson. Being one with nature is a huge step in transcendentalism and you almost need to be half human half nature to really understand transcendentalism. Once you realize the beauty of the world, and realize that God is in everything a person can not just live but begin to “Be.”

This to me symbolizes how God, even if we don't know it, is in every part of nature.

This podcast is an interview of philip Gura, an American author who wrote “American Transcendentalism.” This podcast is about what transcendentalism looks like in the current age. Philip Gura wrote his book about how we live in a time where you can't really just go out into the woods and live. Most people have jobs and families, and his book is on how these normal people can still transcend while keeping their lives. Phillip gives many tips like a weekly hike in the mountains and a daily walk. If not a walk then just go outside and breathe the fresh air to get out of the office. Even though we live in a modernized world, transcendentalism can still exist.

Poem, Enosis By: Christopher Pearse Cranch (The First Poem)

This is a poem by Christopher Pearse Cranch all about transcendentalism and how everybody can be better than how they are currently with focus. The last stanza in the first section:

We, like parted drops of rain,

Swelling till they meet and run,

Shall be all absorbed again,

Melting, flowing into one.

This, to me is one of the best stanzas in the poem because of the metaphor used. Christopher compared human life to a drop of rain, and the process of a drop rain forming, coming down than reforming (the water cycle). What i took from this is that, like the drop of rain, life has a format it will go through and no matter what kind of details happen, like the clothes you wear and what sport you play, life will always follow the same plan. So isn't it just better to have simplicity in life?
