Definition-Phonemic awareness is the understanding that words are made up of individual sounds, known as phonemes. It involves the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate these sounds. Developing phonemic awareness is crucial for learning to read and write.

Classroom activity- This activity involves using sound boxes to help students identify and segment phonemes in words. For example, for the word "cat," students would place a letter in each box for the sounds /c/ /a/ /t/. This activity accommodates learners at various developmental levels by providing visual and tactile support for phonemic awareness. For students who are just beginning to develop phonemic awareness, the teacher can use larger, segmented boxes and provide more guidance. As students progress, they can use smaller boxes and work independently.

Two resources-

Phonemic Awareness Games: Families can use games like "I Spy" to encourage phonemic awareness at home. For example, they can say, "I spy something that starts with the sound /b/." This resource is suitable for all families.

Multilingual Phonemic Awareness Resources: For families with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, the website Colorín Colorado offers multilingual resources to support phonemic awareness in various languages. This resource is specifically designed to meet the needs of families with communication and cultural dynamics that may pose challenges in supporting learners at home.

Definition- Phonics is the method of teaching reading and spelling based on the understanding that letters represent sounds, which are blended together to form words. It involves the relationship between sounds and their corresponding written symbols (letters and letter combinations).

Classroom Activity-In this activity, students use letter tiles to build words based on the sounds they hear. For example, the teacher can say the word "cat," and students would use the letter tiles to represent each sound (/c/ /a/ /t/). This activity accommodates learners at various developmental levels by providing hands-on, tactile support for phonics. Younger students may focus on simple, three-letter words, while more advanced students can work on longer words or even multisyllabic words.

Resources for Families-

Phonics Apps and Games: Families can explore phonics apps and games that are available for smartphones and tablets. These interactive resources make learning phonics fun and engaging for children at home.

Culturally Inclusive Phonics Books: For families with diverse cultural backgrounds, it's important to have access to phonics books that reflect their cultural experiences. "Lee & Low Books" offers a diverse selection of children's books that incorporate phonics and represent a wide range of cultures and experiences. This resource specifically meets the needs of families with diverse cultural backgrounds, providing materials that resonate with their family dynamics.

Definition-Fluency in reading is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. It involves the smooth, effortless, and efficient reading of connected text.

Classroom Activity- In this activity, students perform a script by reading from it, rather than memorizing it as in a play. It accommodates learners at various developmental levels by allowing them to engage with texts at their individual reading levels. Students who are still developing fluency can practice with simpler scripts, while more advanced readers can tackle more complex material.

Resources for Families

Fluency Practice with Audio Books: Families can utilize audio books to support fluency development at home.
