Turning Crowdsourced Data into Art

Aaron Koblin is a programmer and designer who often utilizes data as a foundation for his visual art. In his TED talk, he demonstrated how data can be transformed into a piece of art. In some cases, he obtained his data through crowdsourcing. Although his project is not directly related to the topic of my project, I think that his approach is an interesting one as he combines data, participation, and art in his work.

Draw the Line is campaign driven by The Center for Reproductive Rights to advocate for safe and legal abortion through storytelling. Anyone can anonymously share their stories through the platform and celebrities sometimes would tell the story of another woman. She interviewed "people who lived in New Haven about the urban renewal project in the 1950s that resulted in the dispersal of the Jewish Community in the Legion Avenue area to make way for the "connector" and what was to be America's model city." This is a good example of utilizing publicly available digital source for artistic activism.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?msa=0&ved=0CAwQmwU&ei=B5jOSrryGZXOyQSaxszqCQ&ie=UTF8&source=embed&ll=41.305568999999984%2C-72.93544300000002&spn=0.01657%2C0.028367&z=15&mid=1tFfyDSa1hP_dbIGd28QTdh9EBq0

"Fazlalizadeh recruited friends and colleagues to help make STWTS a reality, drawing her subjects in strong, even confrontational poses that are meant to “humanize” the faces of women in the public space. The portraits are accompanied by lines of text that speak to the harassers and offenders who aren’t often called out. “My name is not Baby,” one caption reads. “Women are not seeking your validation,” quips another. "

The boxed set covers major topics from security deposits and subletting to paint and privacy. 10,000 decks of flash cards were sold by the tenant advocacy non-profit organization Tenants & Neighbors and all proceeds went towards their work (now sold out)." The idea of gamifying the process of raising awareness about an issue could be an effective approach in spreading a message to a wider audience, as it includes participation, art, and information.
