Write an initial (1-2 paragraph) draft of your teaching philosophy on your own personal Padlet (below). We will work to evolve these philosophies throughout the semester so do not feel that they need to be mature at the beginning. We will use this Padlet as a space to post weekly reflections that assist you in evolving your philosophy. [Click the pink plus (+) sign in the lower right to create a post-it.] **PLEASE remember that these are forward-facing philosophies and accessible by your peers (and Rachel).

When I am learning something I decide to make it my passion. I believe emotion breeds intelligence and understanding. I think if someone can have a positive look at the material shown in class and begin to enjoy learning it, I believe that is the person who is going to be the one who is successful. But it is a decision as a student do that. So as the teacher I want to make the environment have that positive emotion more prevalent to allow for students to make that decision and become passionate to overcome that fear of the class and begin enjoying the class. I also believe that the ability to teach others the material when given the opportunity allows for better understanding and if I can get my students to do that I believe that will help them understand the information better.

When teaching today, Jacob decided to make the students get up and draw a bone on the board which forced them to communicate more with each other. This allowed for more connections between my students and I. This also allowed the tables to finally be more comfortable talking to each other. There was a lot of laughing and compliments on bad and good drawing but it brought people together.

When trying to allow access to people, I have been giving people my contact information so that if they have a question that comes up out of nowhere, I am able to answer them at the moment they are thinking about it so that they can be able to correct or strengthen a thought.

For this reflection, I wanted to talk about having a growth mindset. In class we spoke about how if someone makes assumptions about you, is it right to not listen or explain what your saying. I believe that it doesn't matter. I think that if you say something in a logical and calm way that genuinely disproves someone's thought they are going to get frustrated but that probably because you are changing their views. When the conversation gets to the point they are no longer listening that is when you cut it off and return to the subject later. I believe this is what will cause the most success in peoples minds.

I think re-teaching is a important modality for active learning. I hold strong to the idea that being able to teach what you learn is the strongest form of understanding. Whenever I have to teach a physiological process to a peer, I always end up being the one more confident in that subject rather than the one who is being taught. This is because your engaging with the material and you have understood it so much that now you feel confident enough to share it in front of an audience. With this we also learned that emotion allows for better cognition of information. If you feel confident is something you will be better at remembering. As well as, moving while learning. As little as tapping your foot or getting up and working on a whiteboard allows for better cognition and thinking.

I think cooperative learning is absolutely crucial when it comes to making an inclusive environment for people. It forces people to communicate but as people do it they start to do it easier and more naturally and get better and better conversations. For example, in our class we first started out say basic ideas and almost just quoting the article but when we were asked to ask questions to some of the quotes we found they got deeper. Their were moments when people wanted to experiment deeper and see how it would change. Also, I got to experience moving Rich around which was an interesting experience. It caused me to be more engaged because I had almost a side reason to continue moving to each table and making him have an easier time hearing. So it was almost like a positive feedback that, while I was helping rich learn I myself was also engaging more. It also made it easier to cause the person in person to speak which causes more engagement, but the downside is, the person virtually doesn't have to engage as much because the in-person will do it for them. On the other end, I can also say it could have the possibility of being a distraction for some students, if they were tasked to do it because they would focus further on the person they are helping rather than the material they are learning.

This week we demonstrated backwards design. This is where the teacher decides what he wants the students to be capable of doing at the end of this class. After that he decides what way he will assess the problem, that will show that the students are able to demonstrate this desired result. After that the teacher decides what activities and projects that will be done during the class that will guide the students toward the desired result. I have mixed feelings about this concept. I like it because it causes the teacher to be more focused and it is less likely that we will be given time wasting assignments that do not benefit our understanding of the topic. On the other side, I do know that if every college and every teacher decides that the goal of every class is different it will make it more challenging for transfer students or graduate schools to believe that the credit that the students accomplished actually will prepare them for the next classes they will take. I believe that higher level classes that focus more on application of information rather than recall, would benefit from doing backwards design.

In this weeks discussion we were unable to to see our module and was unable to pre-party this weeks discussion. This added to extra struggle that came with trying to understand the material. The fact that it was TBL saved me personally. We as a group were able to find separate sources to understand the 4S to the best of our ability. Not being able to preparty caused a ton of issues learning because of the fact that we were trying to build a foundation, while the teacher was already expecting a foundation to be in place. This is why homework, preparty activities and just prerequisite classes are so important. Without the foundation, no honest discussion can take place. This shows how important in a class when teaching to make sure you create a strong foundation for the students so that they can succeed later.

This case study, frustrated me. I have seen this in my labs multiple times where I will say something and somebody else will say it and then they will get the credit. This taught me to speak up a little more now these days so, that I am not overlooked. As for the class today, I did feel included because being the stray it causes you to have to engage with your group and write down what your group spoke about and relay that to other groups. I do think that there might have been a chance that people who were not a stray could have slid by and not had to engage so, even though the idea of 2 stay, 1 stray is creative. I think as you have more and more stays their is less and less need to engage but I can't deny that it requires a certain percentage of the group to engage.

The Kolb's cycle was fun. It reminds me about earlier in the course we talked about how emotions can spark learning and memory and the Kolb's cycle does that. I went got my elephant and that made me think about my friends and it gave me comfort and joy. It also exemplifies Reflect on one’s beliefs about teaching (online) to
maximize self-awareness and commitment to inclusion as well as, creating a environment that fosters belonging. If a person has an item that makes them feel good their is probably a greater likeliness that they will feel included and more likely to be themselves. This will assist in their comfort in class. This will also help eliminate any variables among assessing understanding.

I believe the reason why I believe people have less grit is because I have hear a ton of people have a victim attitude when it comes to academics. If the outcome of their grade is not what they want they decide that they must not be intelligent enough and will never be able to get all the information in their head. So they also have a lack of a growth mindset as well. I feel if someone has the growth mindset and realize how truly vast our minds are. It will show them that they can and will be able to remember as much as they need to, as long as they put in the effort. I just feel that when they get to that phase they deny their own brains ability to take in information.
