Math never made sense to me, history drove me mad, and science seemed to be about the most boring topic on the planet.  I love to be creative, to get messy with my hands, to draw, to write, to color and design. I learned the most when I was able to show my true colors with my own twist. 

I don’t think I ever understood the type of learner I was until I was in college, up until then I just thought I wasn’t a numbers person. Eventually, I learned tips and tricks to help me learn the material I needed to know to pass classes. Slowly, I figured out that creating charts, writing out mind maps and color coding information not only helped to retain the information but to interpret it so I would understand it on my own terms. 

Throughout my studies, I’ve continued to evolve as a learner, realizing now maybe I don’t have the time to write out pretty concept maps, but can use the tools on my computer to help me generate a different version.  

As a an educator I can see it in my students, their frustrations with numbers and sciences, I identify with them and we talk about different ways that they can study to help them.  I don’t know that I reach each and every single one of them, but I do know that at least starting the conversation of a growth mindset helps them realize it’s not that they can’t, it’s just that they can’t YET!
