My school faces a vast array of challenges - students that come to us unprepared due to district policies that don't meet student needs, the constant problems of being in a city of poverty, and a state entity that is breathing down our backs, scrutinizing everything we do - which often leads to less people wanting to take risks. Mostly, when it comes to implementing MYP curriculum, the biggest challenge will be breaking my peers out of their "safe zone" and encouraging them to challenge themselves and take risks. We have made some meager attempts to increase vertical and horizontal planning, but that needs to be expanded. There has been some work to familiarize newer staff with MYP/IB, but more time is needed. I am confident with the staff we have that we can use each other as resources to collaboratively learn how to improve our practice and become stronger IB teachers, given time to do so.

Personally, my challenge through this workshop is to build a stronger connection between all aspects of the curriculum so that I can play a role as a leader in my school. I have experience working in the past with teachers who were well-versed in the method. My knowledge is experiential, so I am looking forward to the qualitative practice that can support and strengthen my work.

Sorry for being long-winded!
Wes

Just kidding... Nate here. My school is currently PYP and IBDP, with only department heads receiving MYP training last fall and little filtering down, so the framework is somewhat unfamiliar to me. We now use MYP best-fit assessment. I have taught DP History and TOK, so I'm not over my head, and I'm enjoying having to engage with the documents. I will be teaching MYP from August, so I am hoping to get some kind of curriculum from my new school this week. (though this is likely still under development as next year will be their first MYP year) Some challenges ahead indeed, but I've got a cool coffee mug to get me through!

MYP being a challenging course requires more effort and understanding of the curriculum.
Guided team work is the essence of the MYP framework which helps in clearing the concepts and collaboration.
The challenge is to get well equipped Teachers who are well qualified for teaching a curriculum like this. More of training and workshops like this would be helpful in increasing those numbers for more effective teaching.

Limited access to reliable information technology has its downside in a world that is becoming increasingly digital. Aside from the physical distraction of limited internet and power disruptions there are unlimited opportunities to facilitate service learning and incorporate them into the units of enquiry. By developing students that are empathetic and compassionate enables agents for change as they can begin to see the world through another lens.

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the framework of the MYP. My current school only uses the assessment criteria, as we are not an MYP school. My DP and ToK experience helped but it still quite different. I’ll be moving to a new school which has just received MYP status, meaning there will be systems in place but plenty left to develop over the coming years. Adjusting to the MYP overall will be a challenge - the structure, the timing, the curriculum. This will be a busy time. I’ll have to tap into the resources available and my teaching network for advice and guidance.

A challenge for my school involves an general student aversion for open discussion and questioning. I understand that our students are learning complicated material in their second or third languages but the reticence to speak publicly is at an epic level. I really think we need to look more at the affective domain for our curricular planning as I believe we tacitly allow our students to reside within their national, cultural shell. My school is well established with the MYP, and I am just the college counselor teaching one history class, but I see the lack of confidence to participate in too many of my students. I was just wondering if anyone else had any ideas or solutions that worked at their schools.
