2nd grade used cheez-its to introduce “arrays” to their class. This replaced cutting paper squares as suggested in the lesson.

Place Value Party

2nd grade hosted a place value party at the end of their unit. Questions from a review could be put into balloons. The student pops the balloon to answer the question.

Place Value- Show more than one way

A new concept to the BEST standards is having the student compose and decompose a number in more than one way. Mrs. Croley made paper manipulatives so that her students could fully understand a “hundred flat” is also 10 tens. When students see a “hundred flat” they struggle to also understand it is 10 tens. These printed place value blocks were printed large “life size” which made it more engaging for the students.

Math journal-Scoot

Ms Hancock put a “number scoot” around the classroom. The student selected one card from the room. They glued their number in their math journal and had to write the number in multiple ways. This was a great formative check for the teacher and an engaging lesson that got the students up and moving.

Attributes of 2D Shapes

Use popsicle sticks to create 2d shapes. Have students come up with the attributes instead of directly teaching them. This is also a great visual to display the attributes.

Place Value 1st and 2nd grade

Rounding

Second grade used a balloon as a visual for rounding. As you hold the balloon when you stick one finger out that represents a 1 in the ones place. Then you stick out 2 fingers to represent a 2 in the ones place. 1-4 will keep the balloon down to the nearest ten. When you get to 5 the balloon goes UP and represents rounding UP to the nearest ten.
