Describe and Explain what some common threats to folk cultures are today?

Today there are threats to folk culture. Some threats to folk culture today are the loss of traditional values and the threat of foreign media imperialism.

Loss of Traditional Value: Clothing is a symbolic importance of folk culture. Many LDCs are adopting the MDCs style of clothing and losing their traditional clothing. This process of copying the MDCs style of clothing is imitation and replication. This adoption of clothing to LDCs is a symbol of authority and leadership. In some countries, people are urged to stop imitating the clothing of MDCs and go back to wearing the traditional clothing. In Muslim countries, the women are urged to wear the black chador instead of skirts and blouses.

Change in Traditional Role of Women: Many women would cook, clean, and take care of the children. Women's advancement was limited by little education and victimization. Popular culture has brought negative impacts for women in LDCs today.

Threat of Foreign Media Imperialism: LDC leaders fear that the dominance of popular culture by MDCs is a threat to their independence. This threat is posed by the media. The US, UK, and Japan dominate the TV industry. LDCs are scared that if they fall into popular culture (watching the MDC TV), then the people will adopt the MDC views, from the TV, and abandon the traditional folk culture.

Western Control of News Media: LDCs think that Associated Press will carry out American and Britain beliefs. The LDCs also think that AP is not advertising news that is relevant.

Describe & Explain how the global economy and culture leads to an increasingly uniform popular culture? Provide as many local examples of this uniformity as you can. Get diverse in these local examples:

A particular fast-food chain or store chain - A restaurant or store chain usually starts as a small company. Over time, that company starts getting popular, depending on its location, and the word of the store and or restaurant gets diffused to other people. Then, the small company goes and builds their store or restaurant in a different place usually by popular demand or by smart marketing. The small company builds the restaurant the same way that they've built it before so it can be more easily recognized. For example, McDonald's big yellow arc or it's jingle "I'm lovin it" is an example of a popular uniform culture. If you were to ask people was is one of the most popular fast food restaurants, there is a good chance that they'll say McDonald's.

Gas stations - A gas station will usually open up in a place that has great movement, but at least a 5 mile radius from another gas station and or city. Due to its convenient location, people will usually stop there in order to fuel their cars because they don't want their cars to stop half way there. Then, said gas station will find more convenient places to open their business. Eventually they will come across an rival, and try to make their gas prices low yet reasonable so they can get more customers and money. An example of this is Shell. Shell is mostly recognized for their constant participation in the Nascar competitions. Although the gas station Shell comes in many different architectural buildings, the logo is what people decipher it from.

Sports stadiums - Sports stadiums are built, at first, for a special occasion, typically for an event. For example, Estadio Das Dunas is a stadium in Natal, Brazil was built for the FIFA World Cup 2014. Due to it being for a international event known by millions, and also it having the national team play there, makes it popularly known. Although most stadiums (in Brazil) don't share a similar figure for the sake of being creative, they do share the same sport that it was built for, soccer. Which in a way, makes it a uniform popular culture due to the similar purpose and structure.

Dance clubs - The owners of dance clubs don't usually build the same club 50 miles down the road like the owners of gas stations due. There is a reason for this though. Dance clubs fall under the category of entertainment. One of the many things that people strive for is entertainment when they come to a new place or is visiting the new place, and if a club is well known, it'll attract more people, especially foreign people. They'll make more money that way than opening clubs up in different regions of the world. Although most clubs are not known by many people, Las Vegas is exceptionally known for their casinos and their clubs. All clubs have a common theme: music, drinks, dim lights/strobe lights/colorful lights, and single people.

Churches - All Churches (usually/commonly) start as a small organization in order to bring people closer to their religion. First impressions count, especially in church organizations, because the impression that the leader of the church leaves on people will decide as to whether that church will be successful or not. An example of this is the church Celebration. It all started as a pastor, his family, and friends in a small building. But due to the impression of his work, more and more people has known about this church and has spread it around. Now, his church is well known in Florida, harboring over thousands upon thousands of people.

What are some common characteristics to these structures (layout, color scheme, size of structure, logo, etc.?) Please discuss specific details:
Some common characteristics are fast food logos, like the M for Mcdonalds, or for gas stations, bp is famous. Most of these structures have the same logos because of all the chains, and they are all relatively small. Exc for a stadium or dance club. They are designed so people can instantly recognize the purpose of them, whether by size, color, or structure, so they make them more uniform.

i. In your opinion, what ideas, beliefs, and values are conveyed by these structures? What clues about values/beliefs are visible?

It is conveyed that the same food should be eaten, same type of gas, same religion, same entertainment should all be done by everyone.

ii. Does this expression of the cultural landscape display any geographic variations as you move from one area to another (cities, states, countries, regions, etc.)- does anything change? Explain.

Some things might change, like types of food to be more suitable in other countries, but the overall purpose stays the same. If it is not a chain, buildings like stadiums, churches, or even dance clubs could be more different depending on where you are. All of the buildings will not look the exact same too.

Explain why popular culture is less likely than folk culture to be distributed with consideration for physical features?

Popular culture can be distributed easily through modern communication systems. Folk culture spreads primarily through hierarchical diffusion when the social groups migrate area to area. Physical features are not extremely relevant in popular culture because popular trends are usually spread virtually through the power of the internet and social media. MDCs and popular cultures are starting to think about the environmental toll on Earth, and how we can protect the resources we have left.
