Foe one year, 100 people without pets completed weekly surveys on how they viewed their enjoyment of life on a scale of 1-100, with 100 being the best.
After this was done, each was given a dog around 5 years of age with similar temperaments and builds. They were to live with the dogs for the next year and do weekly reports on how they perceived their “zest for life”, i.e. how much they were enjoying their life. Food, money for vet bills, etc. were provided for the dogs. Check-ins were done once a month to see the treatment of the dog and ensure it was not being abused or neglected.

The people were allowed to keep the dogs, provided they had been deemed as suitable pet owners.
-In the year without a dog, the mean rating of life enjoyment was 46%. However, with a margin of error of 10%, there is always a chance of the results being skewed or somewhat incorrect. This could be adjusted but it will never be 0%.
