This is a blog post that answers a mother's concerns about her children using social media. She needs good reasons to limit their use of social media. The writer that answers her lists all negative social media outcomes on children's social and emotional development. I think the list brings up some important issues, but also overlooks many of the positive effects of social media. In general, when we speak of social media we shouldn't treat it as a black or white phenomenon. We should emphasize the nuances.

Power of deception: fake restaurant becoming #1 on Trip Advisor

I found this VICE video so interesting. A guy in London succeeded in making a restaurant that never existed first in Trip Advisor's London restaurants. It makes one think about the deceptive nature of trusted websites such as Trip Advisor. Fake reviews are not uncommon, and one wonders if the information that is supposed to be shared and created among the users is genuine. It also makes me think about the idea of "trendy" and how malleable that concept is. People are ready to accept anything as valuable as long as it's being talked about. It's not about quality, but about reputation.

New YouTube monetization rules

YouTube recently announced that creators who have less than 1000 subscribers and less than 4000 hours of view time in the past year won't receive monetization for the content they put on YouTube. This worries small creators, who argue that their work isn't being valued by YouTube. Further, it makes succeeding on YouTube even harder than it already is. On the other side, YouTube is trying to maintain its relations with advertisers. Many think that YouTube favors its advertisers over its creators, which accounts for the many criticisms the platform has received over the past months.

Social media use and face-to-face interactions: a study

This article summarizes the results of a study that investigated the effects of social media use on face-to-face interactions. It found no significant effect on the face-to-face interactions. However, an interesting finding of the study is that those who used social media and lacked face-to-face interactions during that week felt more lonely. This makes a lot of sense, given that on social media we are constantly bombarded with images of people and their social circles. These images might be exaggerated, but the viewer cannot know for sure, so they still invoke a feeling of loneliness.

A somewhat unsatisfying article about the effects of images related to fitness on one's own habits. It's not as black or white, the article says. The article ends with: "The researchers found that people felt most concerned only when watching friends who were most like themselves in height, weight and body type". This raises an interesting question: given that social media encourages comparison to peers, what effect do friends' social media activity have on our perceptions of ourselves?

While this article is unnecessarily negative, in my opinion, it does mention something important: social media is taken for granted by younger generations (mine included), and a critical mind is key when it comes to using it. We have to be critical about the lack of privacy when using social medias like snapchat. Many assume that what we send disappears and doesn't matter, but a single screenshot can make a difference, and cause a lot of damage. Just because something is easy to use doesn't mean that it is harmless.
