1. Do they know how to use a catalog system?

2. What strategies are being taught to children in the context of learning the layout of the library?

3. What technology is currently available in the library?

I chose these questions because it's important to know what is available in the library in terms of technology. Can students do catalog searches right then and there from within the walls of library or will they only be able to do searches prior to their visit? 

Also, have the students been taught how to do this? If they don't know how to use the technology, then there really is no point in having access to the catalog online. 

And finally, assuming there is a catalog online and they do know how to use the technology (e.g., computer, iPad for searching purposes) is there even a catalog online available for them to access? 

I found that while I was a school librarian, there was in fact a way to make the catalog searchable to others beside myself outside the walls of my library. It was one of my long term goals to start linking school staff to the searchable database and in doing so, encourage them to teach their students this skill due to its real life benefit in real life situations outside the school community (like in the public library!) I never realized this goal as I my librarian career was cut short and I began to pursue my career as a teacher. The end goal is to get students more excited about reading and if they fall in love with an author or series, there is a great use in having knowledge in how to search for books online. As a future classroom teacher, I want my students to not only have access and knowledge of their library catalogs, but get experience searching sources like Amazon for books and the public library catalogs in their own towns to show how much money they can save by utilizing the library in their own town.
