The setting and environment :
In this painting we can see a woman who is sitting on a purple bed. We can suppose that it’s an hotel bedroom because this room is very simple without any decoration. The woman is looking outside to the city. It can be supposed that it’s a summer morning because of her outfit. Outside of the windows we can see an orange building.

Interpretation of Morning Sun

we see a woman in an impersonal room sitting in the middle of a bed. She is looking across the window but without any definite purpose. This particular distant gaze suggests a kind of reflective mood that sets her apart from her immediate environment. She seems to be staring into an empty space. Her posture indicates stillness, with arms resting across her knees. Her upright figure is wholly aligned with the vertical line on the wall resulting from sunlight protection through the gaping window. This vertical line even cuts her figure lengthways from head to bottom. A close look will reveal that the bright sun coming from outside is in fact used Hopper to draw wines of shades across the bed’ framing the woman within rigid lines that look like imprisoning bars of shadow lines. Straight lines are predominant: the shadow striping effect of the bed itself, the rectangular sun reflection on the wall and the window frame with its four closely knit vertical lines that echo prison bars.even the outside world mirrors geometrically and obsession with repetitiveness. We can see in this painting a feeling of individual loneliness and imprisonment and urban alienation. The painter doesn’t focalise on movement which relates to life but on stillness

House by the railroad (1925) and Automat (1927)
Both of the painting have shades of grey and brown.
In Automat, we can see a women sitting alone at a table of a cafe, similar to in House by the railroad,there is a big house alone, lost in the middle of nowhere.
The women in Automat seems be in the dark like the house of House by the railroad which have the front on the shadow. Outside in Automat it’s night however, the house is in a blue and yellow sky.
Both paintings have been painting in 1920´s during the great depresion.
The girl look sad and the house abandoned.
The painter use the light to show the principale element of his painting. He probably want show the consequence of the great depresion.

Chop Suey, 1929

Common points :
They are two realistic painting. We can see on them normal life scenes.

Differences :
First, colors of “house by the railroad” are darker than “Chop Suey” ‘s colors.

Then, even if they both represent a normal life scene, the scene that they represent is different : the first one represents a house at the second plan, and a rail road at the first plan and the second one represents two women at a table and a men with a women at an other table in a restaurant.

Alison, Jade, Maéra: task 2

Commons points: these two paintings represent a bar. We can see people sitting at a table. There are several people who communicate with each other and who spend a friendly moment. There is a similar color in the two pictures: red. The decoration is very simple. It symbolises the sharing.

Differences: One of these painting is rather light in color but the other is mostly dark. The Night Hawks date of 1942 during the second world war but the other date of 1929 during the period between the two wars. The first was taken from the outside and the second from the inside.

Approaching a city and House by the railroad
On the painting named house by the railroad there is only one house of rural architecture, we can think it’s the contryside. However on the other painting there are many buildings of urban architecture because it’s a city. But in both of them we can see rails for trains. Yet in the city they are several rails.
Now we will talk about colours and shapes. On the painting of 1925 the main colours are grey, black and white with a lot of shadow nevertheless on the painting of 1946 the main colour is the orange.
We think that the dates of the creation of these paintings influence there contents. Between 1925 and 1946 the war appened so that change a lot of things in the head of the painter!!!

My name is Edward. I’m 47 years old and I’m a waiter in a Chinese restaurant named Chop Suey. This is how we name all the Chinese restaurant in New-York but it’s at the origin a meal. My restaurant is located in a district of Brooklyn in New-York. On a beautiful sunny day of automn in 1929, I am on duty. It’s early, the restaurant isn’t yet open. But me, I raise the blinds and the sun lets appear a ray of light that illuminates the entire room. The first customers begin to enter. Two women sit at the table in front of my counter. One of them immediately attracts my attention, she is wearing an emerald green dress, her makeup embellishes her pale complexion. She seems to look at me for a long moment. The other woman interrupts this moment, she says “waiter! Two coffees please” So I turn to go prepare the order. I slip a piece of paper with my adress written on it under the bill. I bring the two coffees and the bill and then I wait. I wait for them to finish their cups and put money on the table. I become red, the moment long awaited is approaching. They stand up of their chairs. The pretty lady takes papers in her hand. They go to the exit door. I still have a hope that she sees my paper. Unfortunately, she crumples everything and throws it in the bin. They leave the restaurant. The emotion invades me. I throw my apron, I go home to find my dog and cry.

A painful wait

It’s the history of Monica, a young women is happy in her life. Having a stable job, a small house in the campaign, a dog she loves and a caring husband. But unfortunately for her, he was absorbed by his job which prevented them from finding both of them in private moments such as sympathetic outlet like restaurant. She was missing a bit of malice in her loving life.
One day, by going into a bar; she crossed the eyes of a handsome man. He was for his taste and he seemed to be able to feel the lack of affection. That day, nothing happened, just one look exchanged. After this occasion, she contacted one of her friends who is server in this bar, to find a way to contact this handsome stranger. She recovered his address to give him an appointment in a automat, the Valentine’s Day night. She feigned to go out with her friends at the cinema, knowing that her husband was working that evening, to go find this beautiful stranger.
She returned in the automat and looked for that person but it seemed he was not there yet. She settled at a table isolated from the others and began to wait. At each jingle of the bell, she was eager to watch whoever returns in the automat because, she was impatient to see her heart stroke.
In order to be able to wait patiently, she bought a coffee and decided to wait despite tiredness that invaded her. She had a sad face and she had her eyes fixed on her cup of coffee. The question that was trotting in his head was: does it worth to wait such a stranger?

Hélène is alone, in the middle of the night, in a automat. But why, why she’s alone, it’s however Valentine’s Day today ? Indeed, if Hélène is alone, it’s because her husband is dead. Hélène is a widow since four months. Throughout a nice day of October, her husband and she walked on the street, talking about their next wedding anniversary, which was the fourteenth February, so the day of Valentine’s Day. But, on the journey to go back at home, the couple crossed a child in the middle of the way. The child was seeking for an accessory who was maybe lost here, but a car came in his direction. The driver, who was not paying attention around her, she didn’t notice the child, therefore she didn’t slow down. The Hélène’s husband understood the situation, ran toward the child, took him away the danger, but after the action, he rammed the car and he died instantly. The woman who drove the car took the sentence of ten years of prison. The Hélène’s husband was a hero, everyone said it, and Hélène knew it, but a hero, it’s better if is alive. So now, at the Valentine’s Day, Hélène ask herself : « What shall I do ? ». She doesn’t know, she just continues her life, without her husband.

The creepy murder

Once upon a time, an old house was located in Colorado. A young family, named Johns, from New York, just moved in, in 1925. This house has been uninhabited for many years and a railroad had just been built. Despite of this, the family still chose this house anyway.The family hadn’t been informed about that the house had a creepy pass.
Indeed, 20 years ago, an old couple lived there. But overnight, their children had no news. A few days later, their bloody bodies were discovered in the attic of the main tower. As a result, a police investigation was conducted, but no one culprits were found. But it was an assassination.... It is said in the village, that strange things were happening there...
During their move in, the parents, Katy and Bob decided to turn the Main Tower Attic into a playroom, located just above the room for Mary and Gary's children.
During the first few days, the parents were happy, but their children complained of strange noises they heard at night.
One evening, a few months later, the parents heard screams from the Attic. They rushed up there, but it was unfortunately too late..... The children were on the floor, their throats slashed... Katy, terrified, screamed at Bob to call for help, but this one was no longer there. She ran into her room to get her phone back, but there was no longer a signal... She searched the whole house for Bob, and when she got to the kitchen, she discovered him with a knife in her hand... Very scared, she ran towards the garden to escape, but it was too late, Bob knifed her.
The murderer is finally discovered, it is Bob, who turned out to be the son and murderer of the old couple who had lived here before.

Axel - Chop Suey b1:18

Jessie and Penny have been a couple since five months. It’s their first Valentine’s day. The couple has planned an appointment in front of the chop suey restaurant in Chicago at twelve o’clock for a face-to-face. Penny loves the Chinese food and she wants to make Jessie discover it.

Jessie arrived five minutes before the appointment to welcome Penny with a bunch of roses. They enter in the restaurant hand in hand after having exchanged a kiss. The receptionist is very hospitable. He shows the couple a small table next to a window. The restaurant is full, a lot of couple have planned a date for the Valentine’s Day. There is just a chair available in front of a man who is eating a chop suey alone at his table. This man has a big bag at his foot and he appears to be in a rush. A waiter comes take the command of Jessie and Penny. Ten minutes later, he brings the courses the two women has commanded. At the middle of the meal, the man next to their table take a machine gun out of his bag and goes out the restaurant. He shots on a group of employees of the restaurant who are taking a break. Everybody in the restaurant begins to panic. At this moment, the man run away in the street. A black car stop next to him and he mounts in it. Two minutes after, the sirens of police begins to ring out. Five policemen enters in the restaurant to evacuate it. Everybody is then shocked by the scene they see out of the restaurant. Seven cooks are inanimate in a blood pool on the sidewalk. Still in shock, Jessie and Penny comes back to their apartment. In the evening, they see in the television news that the mans who killed seven people is a very famous gangster and the seven cooks are in the Irish mafia.

The House by the railroad
Arnold and William are talking in a train when they see a house, alone, next to the railroad, they say :

“ Oh Arnold did you see this house ? says William.

-Of course I saw it, what a big house alone in the countryside, answers Arnold.

- I read something about it in the newspaper last week. Do you know what happened here ?

- No for sure, what did you hear about this house ?

- I'm sure you aren't ready to listen to this !

- Is it as incredible as that ?

- Just listen now and hold onto your seat. The owner has been arrested 2 weeks ago. He was a madman. You know, now every people: everybody migrates to the cities. And from 10 years, this house is the only one who has been standing here in the region. It was an hotel. So for people who was passing here by night, it was the only place to sleep. The owner was a man who lived alone, in this big house. He suffered from the loneliness. So, he became mad and started to share the personality of two different people : the kind boy who welcomed people in his hotel, and the mad grandmother who wanted to kill the customers. So, when customers came here, they saw the kind man, and they thought it was a great place to sleep, but later, during the evening, when they returned to the house to sleep after that they ate in a restaurant, they saw a grandmother looking at them outside, in the dark, from the window at the third story. They entered, and went to the bathroom, and while they were taking a shower, the grandmother entered silently, a kitchen knife in the hand, and assassinated them under the shower.

- What a terrifying story! How was he arrested?

- After many disappearances in the region, the police came into this house and discovered the man with a wig and a dress of an old woman. They discovered also human bones in the garden.

- I will be terrified now when i will go to an hotel ! Oh ! We are arrived in Grand Central Terminal. Time passed quickly because of your story, thank you William !

- See you tonight !”

My name is Mike and I will tell you what happened this Saturday night of 1941 :

It was a normal summer night. With my wife, Jessie, we were at the Leon’s bar. Leon was an old friend and the manager of a small diner. This diner was at the corner of the street. I don’t remember its name but I remember that on the front was a phillies cigar publicity. We were drinking a coffee when this man arrived in the bar. He ordered to Joe a coffee like us. This man was sitting on my right. He was alone and quiet. He looked very calm like a normal person but I found this man very strange. He was wearing a black suit and a black hat. It was 11P.M and we were tired that's why we wanted to go back in our home. I asked to Joe how much the two cost . At this moment, in the street a dark car arrived. The car stopped in front of the diner in the street. Suddenly, the strange man of the diner saw this car and he jumped behind the bar. Jessie, Léon and I didn’t understand what happened. Then the tinted window of the car opened and I saw that the person in the car had a gun. So quickly, like the strange man, with my wife, I jumped behind the bar to be protected. The strange man who was hidden like us had also a gun in his right hand. With my wife, we were petrified. However, Leon stood still because he didn't see this car. It was at this moment that, with a terrible noise, the man of the car shot at Leon. The bullet shot his arm and broke the window of the diner. He fell down and screamed. I couldn't move, it was horrific and Jessie began to cry. The man with us shot at the car two times. He wanted to shot another time but he received a bullet in the head. He fell down. He died. After that, the car disappered in the night. We were shocked.

After that, we wanted to know who this strange man was and who died in the diner. We found that he was a member of the irish mafia and that he was killed by a member of the italian mafia.

Today, Leon has only a little scar on his arm because, luckily, his injury wasn't very serious.

With Jessie, when we think back of this terrible night we are always terriffied but we must try to forget this event.

We are in 1939, during the beginning of world war 2, during this period Germany is directed by the Nazi, they want to control the world. For now, the Germany has invaded the Poland. It’s the begining of defeat of France.
It’s midnight in New York Movie. In the same period, New York City is poor after the Great Depression and many of citizens have lost money because of that. In a small and dark movie theatre, there are three people who watch “Wizard of Oz”. There is a woman. She is blond and tall. She wears blue and red uniform and black shoes. Her name is Clara Oswald and she is usherette. She is 30 years old. She is married with Piter Oswald and she has one young child. She is a middle class woman. She is a strong woman, brave, thrusthworthy and thoughful for her family. She changed her job because of Great Depression. She seems to be waiting for clients but actually she is waiting for a mysterious man because her husband is in France for a secret mission and she could not have any news since his departure. He is 32 years and he is a strong man, brive, robust and loyal. He was gone for searching information about the plan of Nazi. The mysterious man that she is waiting for is an spy like her husband. He returns to France with secret information for her. She looks at the man up of the stairs. The mysterious man with a black rain coat and a black helmet who hide the of his face goes down the stairs and he tells her discreetly that her husband has been caught by the german’s soldiers. She is devastated by this information. She has her hands on her face, her face is contorted, her mouth is full open and her eyes full of tears.
