Don’t Wear Expensive Items

Leave your expensive clothing and jewelry at home. Flashing expensive items increases your chances of being robbed.

If you are out with a camera, secure it tightly or keep it in a backpack and wear both straps of the backpack. It is best to avoid wearing a purse, but if you do, make sure it is securely around your shoulder or across your chest. Pickpocketing is one of the most common forms of crime in the country.

Stick to Bottled Water

Only drink bottled water. If you drink tap water you’ll likely become sick. When ordering drinks, don’t order a drink with ice unless you see where the ice comes from. If it is ice from the tap, you shouldn’t use it. If you have bottled water in your hotel room, check the cap. If the seals around the cap are broken, don’t drink it.

Know What You’re Getting

Many people on the streets will try to sell you goods they say are one thing, but usually aren’t. Some will tell you that you are buying silver or pearls. That may not be true. With silver, assume what you are buying isn’t silver. When it comes to pearls, have the seller hold a lighter under the pearls. If he/she won’t, it’s fake. If the pearl darkens or burns, it is fake. A pearl will not burn or turn dark.

Watch Your Drink

It is almost always better to simply purchase a liquor straight. This way you generally know what it is and what you’re getting. If you feel like a mixed drink, watch the drink being made and keep it in your hand. People slipping drugs into drinks can happen here, especially to women. The drinks in hotels are usually fine, but elsewhere, you should remain vigilant.
