“Virtually no democracy in the world has the death penalty, except the United States,” says Jordan Steiker, a law professor at the University of Texas who’s written a book on the death penalty. Most other countries that use capital punishment are autocratic regimes or countries that use it to punish high crimes such as treason, he says.

“The U.S. is such a remarkable outlier in its continued use of the death penalty for ordinary crimes,” Steiker says.

Explanation: Yes, every other European country has the death penalty, but every other European country also has extensively more shootings and acts of mass terrorism. Therefore, the USA having harsher punishments and the death penalty has been a proven deterrent.

“I want him to sit in a cell and rot for the rest of his life,” Andrew Pollack told CNN. Pollack’s 18-year-old daughter, Meadow, was killed at Stoneman Douglas.

The significance of this line is that it shows even the parent of a victim killed in a shooting does not want the shooter to receive the death penalty. Instead, he thinks that a life sentence in jail is a harsher punishment. This goes against what society would think the parent wants to happen--most people would think he would want the shooter to die. This shows that the most extreme penalties are not always the harshest.

Does the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment,” allow it?

Explanation: This shows that the Eight Amendment is a reason supporting that the death penalty could be abolished. It also shows that the death penalty could be abolished because the Eight Amendment might not even allow it.

"Scheidegger also believes that putting a convicted murderer to death is the only sure way to prevent that person from doing harm again."

Explanation: This shows that if he was put into prison or freed on purol he could still cause harm.
