After visiting MMACA museum, we would like to explain which was the activity that we would like to do with our students so that they might keep learning maths. (Group 8 Seminar A)

Is it easy to choose a sample?

This activity tries to question the statistical data that we receive every day. Even though statistics simplifies this data using numbers complex information, it does not always consider the whole picture.

To do so, this problem has 100 stones of different measure and weight. It asks us to choose 10 stones and weight them togehter, so that we know the average weight of 100 stones. Once we have the average we have to compare it with the real average weight.

Is it enough to have common sense?

Every time we count items, we are defining them, as we are supposing they are similar enough to include them in the same category.

Statistics inevitably simplify real world but we have to learn how to understand the statistics we are bombarded with every day, using a critical view.

How we solve it?

We have to choose 10 stones among 100 stones, weight them together to find the average weight of the total amount of stones.

To solve it, we have to choose correctly the stones to weight them and that is, to choose them randomly. This is because we cannot trust in a choice based on human factors as our perception tends to chose the biggest stones.

Precisely, if we do it this way, as weights are distributed asymmetrically, it is proved that most times the sample is below the average. Just as opposed to human choices, which are usually above the average.

How can it be useful for the learning of mathematics?

This activity tests our common sense and the logic, as it makes us question our previous ideas and face a situation in which we can have troubles with statistics. Therefore, it promotes question -making, to do hypothesis and to think critically.

Besides, it produces new knowledge that can be applied in other mathematical situations, as for example the use of rules of three, making this knowledge useful for kids' lives since they can use it in other real situations. Providing a deeper understanding, when they have to weight pieces of fruit when doing the shopping.

Therefore, we can say it is a competence-based learning, since maths are not only inside the school, they are also part of our reality.
