Learning objective 1: A commentary piece on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – “The Danger of the Single Story” Date – 23/11/17

“The Danger of the Single Story” was effortlessly depicted by African author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in a commentary video about her novel. There she spoke about the stories she read as a child which were mainly about European and the impact that it had on her early life as a child. Adichie continued to say, as she got older, she understood the single story but as she travelled out of Nigeria into the United States, she also experienced that a single story can also be addressed in different ways. This is addressed to how you see and depict a situation or person. Adichie experienced a sensitivity towards stereotypes against her culture and herself, this was because she was open to a whole new cultural environment, that thought her that her kind of people was inferior.

The European rediscovery in the fifteenth century and their first interactions with the Indigenous people had a major impact upon the Indigenous people of the Caribbean. Millions of lives of the Indigenous people have been lost due to enslavement, disease and genocide from the Encomienda System. This further led to the extinction of the first people of the Caribbean. The European Settlers didn’t see this as a problem, European exploitation continued, however through the lives of Africans via slavery and East Indians via indentureship. The European culture has had a major impact on the Caribbean’s culture, via the way we think, speak and see things in society. Our colonial power has had influenced the cultures because of Racism, white supremacy, religion, colonialism etc. This influence has perpetrated the minds of the Caribbean people who have seen themselves as inferior to the whites, and generated self hate. They have conformed to the norms of the Europeans and not the norms of their island or themselves. In recent times, most of the Caribbean are seen as independent to an extent, experiencing self love, a sound and renewed mind in the direction of life and civilization.

In plenary 10, the social environment of the Caribbean is mainly based on the Caribbean’s identity, consisted of; languages, festivals, beliefs etc. Caribbean islands were then exposed to language variations brought forward from their colonial powers. This exposure led to the transformation of languages across the Caribbean from generations to generations. As culture evolves, so do the languages. Informal languages such as Creole English, Garifuna etc. are communicated through peers and informal groups across the Caribbean. E.g. The home, church, school etc. However, in Formal institutions, Standard English is a level of prestige the region will like to reach. Language has a meaning as it is attached to different locations in the Caribbean, E.g. The work place.
Caribbean’s cultural practices are often done as an expression of their colonial powers and the different ethnic groups of the Caribbean. These cultural practices are seen as a way of expressing the Caribbean’s lifestyles to those of the Extra Regional Territories and also to those at home. The expression is to describe and educate ones of the Caribbean’s historical beings and cultures brought to the Caribbean through time. In recent times the Caribbean’s cultural practices are not only seen in the region but also internationally through Caribbean Diasporas.

Learning objective 3 – the “One UWI” initiative of theUniversity of the West IndiesDate – 24/11/17

The whole concept of “One UWI” is to be grounded in the oneness between the different campuses throughfunctional and strategical objective that will make UWI effective and in lined in its various operations; technology, teaching, governance, academic programing etc. The “One Uwi” accomplished their different faculties, open campuses, institutes and different committees in the universities. The “One UWI” is basically about regionally integrating the campuses and its people. However, in spite of their achievements, One UWI struggled with challenges and treats. UWI must’ve strived for integration and a oneness between the campuses, but that didn’t happen. Each UWI campus holds different indenties and cultures, this therefore caused division in the campuses. The culture on different campuses are strong therefore, persons are concerned about what they are doing and how they do it. The development of these campuses are on different levels therefore, some campuses are stronger in particular faculties and governance.

In recent times in the University of the West Indies, integration and communication is not solely present. This is because persons of other regional countries are not interacting with locals of the island. In UWI St. Augustine, there’s separatism between locals and immigrants in the campus. The goal of integration among students from the One UWI was not met due to the separatism among students.

During the semester as a student in this course, a countable amount of lessons has been learnt, challenges

have been occurred and also expectations were merely met. Caribbean civilization has taught me how to be open minded, to understand situations and circumstances that took place in a more in depth way as possible. This course thought how important it is to know your history and the fundamental facts associated with it, in terms of having a clear idea of the Caribbean was, has been and is going to be. It gave me the understanding of the major effects and strongholds that our colonial power has on our people through our mind sets, decisions and our ability to conform to things. This course led me to have self love and to appreciate having some sort of black origins as a mixed (dougla) person of the Caribbean. Loving my history, backgrounds and cultures that make me the person. This foundation course has been challenging at some point because it was a lot to critically understand and remember, however every topic was more intriguing but also quiet difficult. my expectations were merely met, this is because this course seemed very simple because its similar to Caribbean Studies but it’s a lot more difficult and a lot to read and understand. Therefore, my expectation for myself could have been better in terms of the amount of work to be done for the completion of this course. I recommend that online lectures should be re-evaluated, live lectures should be considered for this course and also more classes should have more interacting between students and lecturers.
