After her parents perished when she was young girl, she was raised by her maternal grandmother. She was called an ugly duckling as a child, and did not have much self-confidence. At the age of 15, she went to a private finishing school in London, England. Her headmistress at the school was a life long inspiration and role model to Eleanor because of her feminist ways. At this school, she learned to be confident and speak fluent French. In 1902, she met her future husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The pair became engaged in 1903. Not all of their family members supported the relationship, but they tied the knot in 1905. They had six children together. She supported youth rights, and worked with American Youth Congress and the National Youth Administration. Eleanor was a prominent civil rights activist in the segregation era and helped work with her husband to improve the rights for African-Americans. She was also an outspoken women's rights activist that many find as their inspiration today.
