It implies that if you hurt someone mentally or physically, you are only making them stronger and/or smarter. The word "wisdom" means to gain knowledge and also gain experience. A good example of the proverb is the early life of former NFL running back, Herschel Walker. He was bullied as kid because of the color of his skin. But, the bullying inspired him to work harder on developing his body. Every day Walker only would come home after school and do hundreds of pushups and sit ups. After a couple months of working out, nobody wanted to mess with Walker.
