They only sought of coming to America for better opportunities, like money and were met with violence. Some where murdered, their work places destroyed and then that was met with more "cruelty." I say cruelty because there hasn't been a "win" for them before. And after dying or losing a loved one they weren't allowed to be claimed as citizens, which was just another lose for them. In China they lost the First Opium War to Britain and were in decline with many resources due to treaties. The discovery of gold in California spread to the east and many Chinese people became opportunists and immigrated west to seek financial fortune in the gold mining business. What stood out to me is how many times the United States set out to help the Chinese people with legal immigration and then made laws and treaties to set them back. For years Chinese Immigrants traveled to California and west to get their share in economic success in the gold rush. However, throughout the years United States citizens and its government placed many treaties and social laws to set them back. I think the main purpose of the Chinese Exclusion act of 1882 was to stop Chinese immigration from flooding California and taking over natural born citizens. In the 19th century many Chinese Immigrants worked on the transcontinental railroad that spanned across the United States. However, in times of economical decline both in the United States due to the great depression and China due to foreign wars both sides of the party could not equally benefit from this spread to the west. The perspective of the letter seems to be coming from a hard working merchant seeking for help and support of white abolitionists to get his message spread through that Chinese people are hardworking and are the same as other people and should be treated as such. The author of the letter makes it pronounced that he is hardworking, pays as much taxes as everyone else, and smells like a normal person as everyone has a smell. He feels as if he should not be discriminated in society for this and is seeking help.   • Why do you think Wong Ar Chong was compelled to write this letter? What motives lead him to have to defend himself and all Chinese in American? 
    • Because he feels attacked/insulted because of what Americans called the Chinese people so he writes the letter to defend him and his people after being oppressed just for being Chinese.

Chong reveals that senators believe they are heathens and do not excercise Christianity but it is a free country. He also reveals that senators believe that Chinese people are not hardworking and Chong says they work as hard as everyone else if not harder. He also reveals that the government believes Chinese people do not pay taxes and keeps their money even though Chong says they all do. Finally the government also believes that Chinese are taking over and whites are out of jobs.   • Source the document by identifying who wrote it, the year, and what type of document is it.  Make two conclusions about what you notice about the year of the source and the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.
    • Wong Ar Chong's letter is a primary source since it came from someone who experienced it. I have come to the conclusion that the only reason Chinese people were treated so poorly is from hatred, by this I mean that "Americans" believed they were superior and disliked the "invasion" of foreigners, despite the fact that they took as trespassers on "their" land. I believe they were discriminated against because of their own failures and not wanting to admit that they had done something wrong.
