The General Structure of a Conclusion

Ways to open up:
  • Challenging the reader: asking the reader to relate the information to their own lives, beliefs, etc. 
  • Predicting (looking to the future): encouraging the reader to see your argument(s) from a wider, perhaps more global, perspective. 
  • Raising a question: encouraging a new perspective or creating new meaning from the topic of discussion.

  1. Restate the thesis / aim of the essay: The restatement of the thesis serves as a useful reminder to the reader as to line of argument taken. 
  2. Summarise main points of argumentation.  Summarises key points made in the essay to remind your reader of your arguments made in the main body. Notice no new information is given so that there is no referencing in the conclusion. This is the last chance the writer has to persuade the reader of their viewpoint.
  3. An ‘Opening Up’ section(s). Here you draw attention to the wider relevance or implications of the arguments in the essay. It is the ‘so what?’ of your essay.  
    • The final sections is the FINAL COMMENT which can be a prediction/ advice/warning/solution etc. Future comment:​
    • What could happen if we don’t act / if we continue doing the same thing?​
    • How are my finding important for the world?​
    • How can my findings make the world a better place?
