As a Mexican-American growing up in America with two Mexican Parents I have learned the value in family, food and dancing/music. During any birthday, bbq, holiday all of my family gathers. During these celebrations there is always a lot of food, tacos, enchiladas, beans, mole and so much more. The music is loud enough for the neighborhood to hear and we dance all night.

Mexican-American Humanities is the study of the blended culture Mexican-Americans bring to the USA. This includes the values, the food, the missing history, and the celebrations.

In this class we watched a video about the names used for Mexican-Americans such as Chicano, latino/a and Hispanic. This shows the dilemmas of personal exploration of what it means to be Mexican and American. When studying a culture you are apart of yourself it opens a lot of doors for this type of self exploration.

I would describe Humanities as studying aspects of human society and culture. Humanities is very important to learn as we grow up as it teaches us different branches of knowledge with the unique ability of self expression. It defines the study of human culture, such as literature, philosophy, history, ethics, and criticism. Humanities include the stories, history and ideas that help us make sense of our past, present and even who we are as a person.

What are some historical components of the founding of Mexico?

Spain explorers colonized Mexico, as the Europeans did the USA. Many other people were in Mexico long before Spain explorers set foot there. The Mayans and Aztecs for example had been there many many years prior. They created their own cities many larger than any the explorers would have seen in Spain. They had very intricate detailed communities. However they weren't loved by the natives due to their human sacrifices and other spiritual intakes. When the Spain came over they planned to bring religion and protection to the natives in return for them being able to colonize and take any resources found such as gold. The mixing of the Native Americans and the Spanish, plus Africans that were brought as slaved workers created the mix of cultures and skin colors. The Spanish had a place for every mix of people, but they weren't equal. This is the foundation that is now Mexico.
