It was there, originally, to stop you safely. However I went by myself and was going to fast and slammed right into a frozen bale. It sent me flying and I did a double front flip and landed straight on ice, chin first. there was blood and people couldn't stop laughing , apparently it looked hilarious.

One good encounter was we had a particular Black bear that we called Goldibutt due to him being Jet Black all except for his tail and part of his butt was blonde. He lived just up the mountain in a cave that we hiked pass regularly. A bad encounter I had was similar to Paulsen's. We were hiking in an unknown area with some relatives and we came across a cave. From the looks of it it was empty. But as we were about to head up more of the mountain a cub came running around the corner and ran into my cousin. It wailed and then the mother came running behind it and jumped on top of my cousin pinning him to the ground. For what was maybe only 20 minutes seemed like an hour as the bear sniffed my cousin and made sure the cub was okay. When she saw that no harm came to the cub she got off my cousin and walked away. We never hiked in those parts for quite some time.
