Herbivores have four stomachs; the rumen, reticulum, omasum and the abomasum.

The rumen: This is where large of amounts of food is stored. It contains microorganisms to digest the plants fibres.

The reticulum: A large muscular sack which churns the food and also contains microorganisms.

The omasum: Has a large surface area which allows absorption of water and salts from the partly digested food. The food is then moved to the abomasum by the omasum acting as a type of pump.

The abomasum: Breaks down protein from the food and prepares it for digestion by the small intestine.

There are two types of herbivore digestive tracts, those with four stomachs to help with digestion by regurgitating etc, and those with one stomach and a caecum.

The herbivore with a single stomach and caecum (rabbits, horses, monkeys) are very similar to those with multiple stomachs. Both have blunt teeth made for grinding and no canines as they don't need to rip flesh.

Lots of bacteria break down the cellulose they consume, hence why herbivores have a caecum.

Herbivores food's nutrients and fluids are absorbed in the small and large intestine.

Waste is then excreted through the rectum.
