"Every day that summer we went to the pine beside the stream of Old Woman Swamp, and I put him on his feet at least a hundred times each afternoon." (pg. 419). The context of this quote is that Doodle's brother is trying to teach Doodle how to walk by simply standing him on his legs until he can stand on his own.

"We decided that when we were grown, we'd live in Old Woman Swamp and pick dog's tongue" (pg. 421). This quote's context is that both the boys were given a sense of hope after Doodle had been able to walk. They begin to contemplate a possible future with one another as a regular family.

The Old Woman's Swamp has several different meanings like hope, a future, peace, or happiness. This swamp is where Doodle and his brother had bonded and spent their most significant memories together. Doodle was taught to walk here, adding a more sentimental meaning to the swamp. It's introduced when Doodle's brother would often spend the majority of his time there, jumping and hanging around the swamp. During his time at the swamp, he yearned for his little brother to join him; of course Doodle couldn't be apart of his brother's desire, living may not of been a possibility at all.

Doodle and his brother visit the Swamp more than once throughout the story, as it's where Doodle's brother decides to teach Doodle to walk during the summer. However, once Doodle learns to walk himself, the brother’s just go there to escape. It represents as a sort of safe haven for the brothers, where they can be themselves. But, once the Scarlet Ibis meets Doodle, the two brothers never visit the Swamp, nor is it mentioned ever again. This is in it of itself as foreshadowing that their private paradise has been interrupted, and soon comes true. Unfortunately, Doodle dies shortly after meeting the Scarlet Ibis.
