         <description><![CDATA[<p><b>1913</b> Jim Martin (12) joins junior cadets &amp; learns to use a rifle</p><p><b>1914</b> Jim turns 13 in Grade 8-last year at school - plays drums at school</p><p><b>4/8/1914</b> Britain declares war on Germany</p><p><b>1/11/1914</b> First Australian troops leave for war</p><p><b>April 1915</b> Jim begs parents to sign consent for him to join Army</p><p><b>12/4/1915</b> Jim enlists saying he is 18</p><p><b>25/4/1915</b> First Australian troops land at Gallipoli</p><p><b>28/6/1915</b> Jim leaves on the troopship Berrima</p><p><b>26/7/1915</b> Arrive in Heliopolis Egypt for desert training</p><p><b>30/8/1915</b> Left Alexandria on the Southland bound for Lemnos &amp; Gallipoli</p><p><b>2/9/1915</b> Southland is torpedoed and Jim spends 4 hours in the water waiting to be rescued by the French while others drown. Jim deals with death for the first time.</p><p><b>8/9/1915</b> Jim's battalion lands at Anzac Cove in darkness and at first light climbs up the steep cliffs to take their position and life in the trenches. Death and disease are everywhere.</p><p><b>6/10/1915</b> Jim gets sick and refuses to seek medical treatment.</p><p><b>25/10/1915</b> Jim has lost half his body weight and collapses vomiting and bleeding and loses consciousness. He is taken by barge to the Glenart Castle hospital ship off Anzac Cove. He receives morphine for pain and is dead an hour later. Jim is buried at sea under the Union Jack.</p><p><b>11/1915</b> Jim's family receive a telegram and later a brief letter advising that Jim had died and was buried at sea.</p>]]></description>
