My Name: Emilee Anne Lawrence

My name is Emilee Anne Lawrence. When I was born my mom and dad decided on Emilee because they loved the name but they wanted to spell it a different way. The Lee is my name comes from two of my great grandfathers who's names were Lee. Emily was one of the most popular names in the year I was born and even today there are lots of little girls being named Emily. Growing up my family would call me Em, Emmy, and many other forms of Emilee. My middle name comes from my mom's middle name which is also Anne. Anne was just a name that my grandmother liked, it doesn't have any significance to family, but now that Anne has been pass on to me by my mother, I plan to keep passing it down to my future children. My last name comes from my father, but in a month I will be getting a new last name. When I get married in December I will be taking my husbands name, Parker.

{Emilee, Valley or Fire, 2016}

My Favorite Characteristic: Humor and Compassion

I think that my best characteristic is my ability to make people laugh and to find humor in life. I enjoy making people happy whether is be through giving gifts, hugs, or telling jokes. Throughout my life I have experienced many deaths in my family from cousins to great grandparents and ages 18 to 102. I think those experiences have made me appreciate life so much more because I realize how short life can be for some people. With that being said I believe that my sense of humor and my want to make people happy makes be a more compassionate person when I comes to cultural differences. I try to find think positively and be open minded.

{Emilee, 2014}

An Important Object:

An object that is important to me is my engagement ring. This object means so much to me because it represents a commitment that I will have with husband when we are married and it represents love. Growing up I saw how my parents have had so much love for each other and I always wished for that for myself. I think that marriage is meant to be sacred and long lasting. I feel like my engagement ring is a symbol of who I want to be one day for my future children and to show them that marriage is meant to last and is not something to take lightly. I think that growing up in church and see my parents relationship, marriage is something that I have always wanted to show the person I love that I am committed to them. This picture is the day that I got engaged to my Fiancé Tim in Piedmont Park.

{Piedmont Park, 2018}

Privilege: Travel

I feel like I am privileged in many ways one of them being my economic status. Although my parents were by no mean "rich" I was able to grow up with both of my parents in a home that was clean and nice. We always had what we needed and there was always food to eat. My parents have always worked hard for my family so that my brother and I were able to go to college and have money to support us along the way. I chose this image of the united states because it represents all of the states that I have visited. This image represents the privileges that I have to travel and to visit new places. Some children that I have worked with in schools do not go outside of the state that they grow up in for many reasons but I think mostly because their parents don't have the money or because their parents do not have the time available for vacations. This was something that I have had the privilege to do because I've had both money and time for these trips.
{amcharts.com, 2018}

Cultural Bias:

With social media being such a huge deal these days and people becoming "Insta" famous, I have come to realize the bias I have against the "Rich and Famous". Based off of what people show on social media it makes their lives look like everything is perfect, but we all know that life isn't always fair. With that being said I think social media is giving people a false sense of what life is really like. I find myself assuming that these social media influencers have plastic surgery and all they care about is themselves based on the pictures that they post. It makes me believe that all people who have money are full of themselves. This may not to true for all people but it is something that I feel when scrolling through post. I feel as if the women on social media who post picture of themselves in little to no clothing and talk about being body positive are fake. I think that these type of women give young girls a false image to look up to in my opinion. I chose this picture because it has over 2 millions likes and Kim Kardashian is an influential person to many women today.

{Instagram Kim Kardashian, 2018}

As a female it scares me to be alone with other women in places that make us vulnerable to possible danger. In the new and on social media you hear weekly about sexual assault and sometimes worse things happening to women all around the world. This has made me more aware of my surroundings and to always stay with other people at night especially. This is a photo from a girls backpacking trip I took with two friends. I think that we could all agree that when we were approached on the trail we had a sense of fear because you never know about other people. We brought our pepper spray and my friend brought her dog along incase we needed her to alert us at night and make use feel more safe.

{Appalachian Trail, NC. 2015}

Something that my parents have always taught me is that family is very important. I have always been close to my family on my mom and my dads side and we always try to spent time together when we can. This picture is very special because it shows my cousins who I love dearly. My cousin, Taylor, on the top right of the picture passed away two years ago and my Cousin, Evan, not pictured passed away 9 years ago. Since the tragic lose of these family members I have even more realized just how important it is to spend quality time with my family because we have so many memories to hold on to when they pass.

{Austin,Taylor,Makenzie,Caden,Emilee,Brealyn 2014}

I haven't taken pictures with my camera in awhile with my phone always in hand it is always easier to take pictures that way. I like taking cool pictures with friends and post them on Instagram or Facebook. Recently one of my favorite literacy practice has been preparing my wedding website on a blog called The Knot. I have posted pictures and wrote stories about how my fiance and I met along with who is in our wedding party and pictures of them as well. The picture of my friend and I at the beach is one of my favorites. It was hard to capture but very fun! I love when a picture turns out better than I hoped.

{Emilee & Alyssa, 2018

I grew up going to church and reading my bible at a young age. It has always been something that I carry with me and brings me comfort. I have many memories of my mom and dad reading the bible to me when I was younger and my mom often quotes bible verses to me when I am feeling down.

I think the part that scares me most about teaching in culturally diverse schools is not being able to connect with my students. Working with students who come from different countries and who speak other languages may not be comfortable creating a relationship with a white american female teacher. In my experience I have noticed that parents and students connect better to teachers who share similar cultures. I hope that I can make an impression on all of my students and they see me as someone they can come too verses someone that they can not connect with.

{Ferguson Elementary, 2017}

I feel like my hours in elementary school has made me a better person and teacher who is willing to advocate for students and make their experiences the best that I can. In a school setting I can support culturally diverse students by making them feel welcome and cared from as well as helping them in every way that I can. For students who do not speak english especially I think that I have enough experience and studies techniques to help these students learn in a classroom setting.

{Created on wordart.com}
