         <description><![CDATA[<div>Knowledge Gaps is a complex problem in terms of socioeconomic and generational difference as well as tech access. At best amelioration of the problem may be constrained. One app that may be useful is "Pocket" -  in essence a news/data clipping service that helps accumulate material or teaching, learning and reseasch purpose.          <title>Boosting Academic Language (Chris Strickland)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>An age-old challenge for new tertiary students is that of writing in language which is sufficiently academic in style. I chose this site as it takes a pretty 'dry' resource (ten lists of the most common academic words) and allows students to see these in context as part of interesting articles - then test their use of these through gap fill excercises and concordance line questions which show patterns of use. Usefully, the gap fills have the ability to allow students to scale the difficulty of their excercises. I intend to use the site with my support class for students who have experienced recent academic failure, many of whom have English as a second language or are very new to   tertiary study.</div>]]></description>
