URBAN ORGANISMS by kathryn

There is a beauty within organisms that often go by unseen. Maybe repulsed and feared by, or have fallen between the cracks of urban life; hidden from civilization and waiting to be revealed.

Angus James- architectural sculptures, Australia-Sydney - 19/04/2016

I particularly like the structural qualities of James's work- the interlinking shapes, the naturalistic freedom of it's first impression, yet it stands so permanent and concrete. It's composition has obviously been planned, although it gives a sense of free forming movement. Similar to that of a DNA strand or a representation of sounds waves or a heart beat; the structure seems to be growing into the urban space it contains.

However I made a good use tot the materials I did find which I feel was part of the process of exploring the urban environment and picking up the "useless" and making them useful and beautiful. I feel like most of the development and process was that of abstraction in attempt to understand the mundane and the urban which I didn't understand too well previously.
The setup as a whole all interconnects as a large organism in itself. A process of abstraction from natural to urban. In a way it can be seen as a landscape upon the desk in refection to the shell drawing.

The contrasting textures are very interesting ones and the shapes they produce are significant to the emotive attachment between the object and the viewer. The sudden loss of solid structure towards the top from the bottom suggests a moment in the piece. One that is striking to observe and very beautiful in form. the organism taking over the rigid urban structure.

The project as a whole was successful as I managed to portray quite an abstract concept unlike the last which focused on the subconscious which was quite vague in its portrayal. However, I feel this topic didn't explore the concept as much I would have liked it to. I could have made better use of the time I was given to research and reflect more efficiently. I feel as though I was a little out of my depth when choosing the topic instead of focusing on something more to fit my usual methods of working. With being in spaces that didn't really express the word urban to its full extent left me very uncertain with the topic. I could have travelled and worked in more urbanistic spaces to compare the results.
Perhaps my aims were too much to take on at this point in time in comparison to my other projects, I didn't give myself room to explore the concepts or many techniques. Although this project wasn't as well developed, I am satisfied with the ambitious concept I set to explore. To try something quite new to me that I wasn't very sure about. I would be able to take my strengths and weaknesses from this to apply them to a more rounded aim that is more personal to me as a whole.
