Yolanda recently moved from the Dominican Republic to New York City. America was in the middle of a Cold War, so everyone was way too cautious, anxious, and somewhat scared for what could happen.

In the story Yolanda is a young immigrant girl that moved to New York. In school she sits in the front of the classroom so that Sister Zoe can help learn English. While also at school many days the students would have air-raid drills and often imagine how it would feel when they died. One day Yolanda looked outside the window and saw little white flakes and had started to shout that they were bombs. As Sister Zoe went over to Yolanda she explained that they weren't bombs, it was only snow. "I saw dots in the air like the ones Sister Zoe had drawn-random at first, then lots and lots. I shrieked "Bomb! Bomb!" " Yolanda had been told so much about the war that everyone was fearing that she began to think about it before anything else. Yolanda, even being new and having little knowledge on war understands that very unsettling things are occurring through out the world. In the quote -"At school, we had air-raid drills: an ominous bell would go off and we'd file into the hall, fall to the floor, cover our heads with our coats, and imagine our hair falling out, the bones in our arms going soft." it explains how the school is handling these times, but it also seems to be having a negative effect on the children's minds. They teach the children about these dark times and over look how easily influenced a child's mind can be. They taught Yolanda someone who was very impressionable these things and it made her connect snow to what she had been taught which was bombings, fallout, etc... it was a misunderstanding that could've been prevented if they just focused on the good things.
