Today we will be exploring not only what happened during the American Revolution but how this affected the American Colonists, the British, and many others.

The Outcome

The outcome of the American Revolutionary War was that the American colonies won their independence from Great Britain. The war officially ended in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

While the colonists were fighting for liberty, hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans and African Americans were still living in chains across the colonies. Many of them saw the war as a chance to fight for their own freedom, not just someone else’s.

The Nanticoke was very much impacted during the American Revolution. Whilst the revolution began, the Nanticoke allied with the British. When they lost the war, they fled to Canada because they were pressured by the European settlers during the mass migration in 1778.

France and Britain don't have a history of getting along well France had recently been beaten by Britain in the Seven Years War and as a result had lost some control of north America. France saw the revolution as a means to cause problems for the British and stepped in to help the colonies.

I was very poor when I saw the opportunity to work seven years and get freedom dues. It was for the best, I wouldn't want to serve on the streets in this weather. That'd be horrible!

Each day I broke a sweat following the orders of another. I was a cook, a gardener, a housekeeper, and a field worker all at once. It was so tiring, I could hardly keep up! The only thing giving me motivation was the freedom dues.

When I had finished my contract, I hadn't gotten the things I was promised. Devastated, I sat outside for a few days in the cold. How could they? Seven years of my life, wasted!

Soon, our government realized they couldn't fool us anymore and I was placed into slavery amongst the others. Thankfully, the Revolution rolled around and I ran to work with the military services for freedom along with the others.

British Loyalists in the American Revolution.

Some colonists were still loyal to Britain while the revolution was going on. They were referred to as "Loyalists." They believed that the British policies were not bad enough to justify the revolution. They saw the revolution as treason and thought that they were better off staying with Britain.

The Nanticoke split up by going north and west. The Nanticoke that went north went to Canada. The Nanticoke that went west joined another tribe called the Lenape. This started when the Nanticoke came to Maryland and some of the tribe still in Delaware.

Britain heavily taxed the colonies (like the Stamp Act and Tea Act) to pay off war debts from previous conflicts, especially the French and Indian War. Colonists argued “no taxation without representation” since they couldn't vote for the Parliament.

Well, it all started when I remained loyal to the British crown. I'd ignore boycotts I saw in the streets and provide for the British military forces while the other Loyalists helped write pamphlets and letters to support and continue the British rule.

I would always receive harassment from those I've betrayed. It didn't hurt one bit, I didn't care! It was for the best, right?

That's what I thought until..

We met our fate and we were titled as traitors by our own fellow neighbors whilst the other Loyalists and I migrated to Canada.. I couldn't refuse the offer for free land in British North America, could I?

Maryland 400

The 1st Maryland regiment was a force that fought the British at the Battle of Brooklyn/Battle of Long Island in August 27, 1776. They were outnumbered by the British. The 1st regiment charged at the British army in order to buy time for Washington's army to escape. Not many survived it. They are remembered as heroes. There is a medal called the "Maryland 400 distinguished service medal" named after them. There is also a monument dedicated to them in Prospect Park.

Nanticoke Maryland History

The Nanticoke, was known as the "Tidewater people" which is a tribute to the original life of the Nanticoke people. Some of the Nanticoke remained on the Eastern Shore.

A story is the Nanticoke was very local in Maryland. They had crops and homes. But then they got kicked out due to conflicts with the American colonists. They moved northwards into the Lenape territory. Some stayed local to the eastern shore but most went north.

Waging war takes a lot of money. The British fought the Seven Years War to defend the colonies in North America and ended up needed money. Their logic was if we just spent all this money defending the colonies then they should pay us back for it. So they started taxing on the colonies. The first unfair tax on the colonies was the Sugar Act in 1764.

The Nanticoke were a tribe of native Americans that lived on the eastern shore. They sided with the British during the American Revolution. When Britain lost the war some of the Nanticoke when north to live in Canada.

The Redcoats were British soldiers during the American Revolution who earned their name for the red coats they wore. Stated by my used sources, Revolutionaries sometimes used nicknames for the soldiers based on their coloring, such as "lobsters" or "bloody backs."

After the revolution, their uniforms were adjusted to be more comfortable, simple, and camouflage. They made these adjustments because of harsh conditions, supply issues, and for combat effectiveness.

The Battle of Saratoga

The Battle of Saratoga, fought in 1777, was a major turning point in the American Revolution. British General John Burgoyne led his troops from Canada toward New York, hoping to cut New England off from the rest of the colonies, but his plan failed when other British forces didn’t arrive to help. American forces under General Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold defeated Burgoyne’s army in two key battles at Freeman’s Farm and Bemis Heights. Burgoyne surrendered on October 17, 1777, giving the Americans a huge victory. This success convinced France that the Americans could win, leading France to join the war as an ally. The victory at Saratoga boosted American confidence and helped turn the Revolution into a global conflict that ultimately led to U.S. independence.

Animals in the American Revolution

During the American Revolution, animals were treated poorly because people had viewed animals as endless resources.

Because of this, one would often used animals for labor, food, and military purposes due to few legal protections and the "A man's right over his property" law that was extended to even being able to torture any living creature that was in possession of another.

When the demand for animals rose, some war drafted animals were casted aside when they were too weak to continue, others were forced to work till death. This led to a decrease in species and habitat loss which caused majority of animals in near areas to suffer.

Unfortunately, It wasn't until after the American Revolution that people started treating animals with respect.

Maryland story

The Nanticoke was a very interesting group. From what we know they started somewhere else in America, but then we don't know how they went north. They were also known to be ancestors with the Lenape tribe. The Nanticoke ancestors lived in Delaware along the Indian River and then migrated to the Eastern Shore to the Nanticoke River. The Nanticoke migration happened in the 1600s but then by the 1800s they had tribes both on the coast of Delaware and on the Eastern Shore in Maryland. The Nanticoke was told if that they helped fight against the British they would be given statehood in the future. That didn't happen until the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

This painting was made by Emanuel Leutze. It shows Washington on a ship on his way to a surprise attack some hessian troops that were working for the British. The painting was finished in 1851. The event happened December 25-26 1776. The painting is not super historically accurate as it was probably exaggerated and was finished in 1851, in Düsseldorf a place in Germany. Supposedly the painting symbolizes unity, freedom, and independence.

The Nanticoke hunted for a lot of their food. The food they hunted was deer, fish and turkey. They also harvested lots of crops such as corn, beans, and squash. They also had wild foods such as berries, cattail and shellfish. Maple syrup was used to flavor certain things. Their food was dried out and boiled in clay pots. The Nanticoke had three crops that they named the three sisters. The three was corn, beans, and squash.

The Battle of Yorktown

The Battle of Yorktown in 1781 was the last major fight of the American Revolution. George Washington and the French army trapped British General Cornwallis in Yorktown, Virginia, while the French navy blocked his escape by sea. After weeks of fighting, Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781, ending the war and leading to America’s independence.

Winter at Valley Forge

At the end they declared that the colonies were now free and independent states with the power to make their own laws, trade, and defend themselves.

This is what some of the Nanticoke art looks like. As you can see it is very detailed and it has feathers and a pattern that you will see it lots of Nanticoke art. In my opinion I think it looks very pretty and unique. I like how different it looks from modern day art and how the Nanticoke used the materials that the tribe had to make their art.

The Davenport letters

The Davenport letters are some letters written by two soldiers fighting on America's side in Massachusetts. The first two letters were written by one author but then he was killed in the war. Another author took over writing letters. The letters have some insight into what daily life was like for American soldiers. If that sounds interesting to you, you should definitely read a few.
