Death Cafe is a monthly, group-directed, agenda-free discussion group dedicated to death (and by default, dying and the afterlife).

Contrary to what many people might think, Death Cafe's are not morbid, gloomy or depressing. Instead, they are lively and spirited with frequent laughter.

Death Cafe is about conversation. It's about people telling their stories, exchanging ideas, learning from one another and sharing moments of great warmth and intimacy.

And people do tend to eat a lot of cake.

It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session. The Death Cafe model was developed by Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky Reid, based on the ideas of sociologist Bernard Crettaz.

The Death Cafe movement is a global, community directed, social franchise which provides an opportunity 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.

Death Cafes are always offered:

- On a not for profit basis
- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space
- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action
- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!

For further information regarding the Death Cafe movement please visit https://deathcafe.com/
