This is because in the book multiple characters have identity problems. With some characters even debating their choice of sides in the gang war. Darry is a perfect example because he is not sure what to do with himself because he sometimes feels that he should be with the Socs. He also has to balance these issues with being like a father to Ponyboy and Soda. Ponyboy recognises this as he acknowledges this in the book when he describes his relationship with Paul in the rumble scene. Darry has both a physical and mental fight with his own identity. In the rumble he fights Paul who was someone that he used to know when he went to school and he literally has a fight with him. Paul can almost be seen as a shadow of his past self.
