The idea is to list the 4 big ideas from a lesson/reading/video/etc. Then the student uses those for ideas to create the 2 most important ideas and then final combines those to create the 1 most important idea. It's been successful thus far with students.

We know we all fall into all of these categories, but we also know that we should all strive to be the intentionally inviting teacher. Start with small sections of time to focus. Teach them the steps of how to work and how to focus to help guide them through their work. We as adults, struggle with the same things but we have better control with getting ourselves back on track. While kids need to be taught how.

This is important because we need to remember to slow down and take the steps in showing them how to be successful to get positive results.

There is also a suggestion to do an activity similar to our DOT activity in regards to relationships with teachers and students (might be good to do this again and intentionally work to reach students). This book also mentions the importance of attending extra curricular activities to show students support outside of school hours. Building relationships is a large part of effective classrooms, but we have to have engaging content too. Relationships alone are not always enough to stop behavior in the class, we need to make sure our learning targets are relevant and meaningful as well as what and how we teach them.

Something we all agree with strongly is that all students need to be taught how to behave. Also that it is normal and necessary to reteach the behavior that we want to see out of the students. While we all have different expectations, behavior is behavior. If we all took energy to continue to teach proper behavior, students can be successful. Not everyone knows what good behavior is from home. It becomes our job to teach this to them.
